Possible carb problems?

Possible carb problems?

Alright guys, see if ya can help me figure this one out.. my '82 S has started acting up recently. I had a funky idle and the infamous honking sound at idle. Shutter valve crapped, so I plugged it off. Well, the idle is still a bit rough and seems kinda low. Will fluctuate between 600-850 rpm when warm. The biggest problem is when it warms up enough to kick the choke off, but isn't completely warmed up yet. If I throw in the clutch for a stop sign or something, the car will stall out. It restarts easily, but it stalls. It doesn't do it all the time either. It seems like it gets worse the colder the outside temperature gets, as well. Also if I'm in first or second gear around 3k rpms and I stomp the gas, the car bogs for a second and then takes off. If I do so above 4k or so it goes immediately. Could this be related to the stalling problem? I'm almost positive the fuel filter is fine, as the car pulls really well all the way to redline and doesn't fall on it's face like a bad filter would cause. Any help? Thanks guys,

I'm not sure how much help this will be to you, as when I had this problem I was still new to my car. But same symptoms, rebuilt the carb and it went away.
To deal with it before the rebuild (read stop stalling at bad times) I upped the idle on the carb to about 1100-1200 using the screws on the nikki.
If I were to guess i would say you're running rich/timing's off (due to the bogging upon acceleration.) If I were in your shoes I would check your float levels, clean your carb, check your timing/spark. Hopefully someone with more experience should be able to help you out a bit more =].

P.S. Even if I'm way off, having a clean carb, re-affirming your timing, and checking your floats is always a good thing =].

I would say it's time for a rebuild of the carb, the kits are only $30-$35.

But it may be just the accelerator pump diaphragm, this would cause the hesitation and possibly the stalling out if it was leaking enough.

There really easy carbs to work on.

Sounds like a vaccum leak. Does it stall when you pump the brakes? I imagine you have a leaky gasket in your carb. Im sure a rebuild wouldnt hurt.

Yes.. I just noticed it today... the idle gets worse when I pump the brakes.. drops about 150-200 rpms or so, and when I let off the idle will spike up to about 1100 or so.. hmm... does sound like a vacuum leak.. well, as soon as Manntis gets my pulley to me, the rat's nest goes bye-bye...

Danny, I Have an 82 myself and I'm having the same @#%^@%!$% problem! During warm-up the car runs like hell. If I don't keep my foot on the gas it stalls out. Doesn't start running normally until it is entirely warmed up afterwhich everything works fine. Midway through warm-up it starts bogging down and shuddering like it's running too rich. I had all of my emmissions stuff removed (i.e. rats nest/shutter valve-removed/acv valve removed, and blocked off, etc.), and never had a problem until it started getting cold. I also have some kind of short/bad ground or something in my electrical which isn't helping the problem (have to check on the ol'starter wiring).
Do you have a #2 water temp switch on your X? This is the switch located on the lower driver's side section of the radiator. It's screwed into the lower engine-compartment side of the radiator and has a wiring harness plugged into it. The aftermarket rad I installed doesn't have one (#2switch), and I'm wondering if installing one might help? (Apparently it signals the ECU during warm-up).
Also, how did you plug you shutter valve? The fluctuating idle when warm sounds like a vacuum, but could also be related to the shutter-valve. (Mine's removed and the hole was tapped and plugged.)

Checked the timing this evening, and it both leading and trailing were within half a degree of factory specs, so that's not my problem... probably a vacuum leak.. Manntis, if you're listening, that pulley is being anxiously awaited...
