possible 12at setup

From what i read, if i got a factory 12at motor, i could use a mega squirt to supply the fuel, and the motor will otherwize drop into my '84 GS with no problem. is this true?

who else has a factory 12a turbo, i'm wondering how reliable it is, like a stock 12a will be much more reliable vs. a 13B-RE .

The cool idea i had was to build a metallic ice blue 12a turbo targa FB. I want to use a factory 12at for some true mazda authenticity. I'm also figuring that this will motor will be cheaper than rebuilding my current 12a with a bridge port.

Who's feelin this idea

I have the 12A efi turbo engine in my Gen 1 convertible. It is better engineered than the 12A. The only necessary upgrade is a moderm ecu. If you dropping it into a 12A car then you will need a new fuel supply system and an efficient manifold and exhaust. As stock, performance is about the same as a 13B in the 85GSL-SE. A 12A bridgeport will give you around 50% more power.

To get decent power you need a new turbo, 2 extra injectors, FMIC, light flywheel and heavy duty clutch. With a 23 year old engine you will need a full rebuild. Most imported into the US are ex automatic Cosmo engines and do not come with the turbo gearbox.

The cost of the12A turbo engine is only a small part of the total cost of changing over from a 12A. This is why the 13 B turbo is prefered: newer, more powerful, and more reliable for the same performance.

sounds like a good idea, but the 12a turbo motors are very hard to get....
you can build a us spec 12a motor for a turbo unit tho.....

Yeah, I agree with 680rwhp12a on this one. I wanted to get my hands on a 12at, but it seems a lot easier to do a rebuild and build the stock 12a to be boosted.

If 680rwhp who owns Rotaryshack says 12ATs are scarce they must be. In Japan they have almost disappeared and rarely come up for sale.

So a factory turbo 12a would be hard to come by, but you're saying that its still possible. I'm really interested in the idea of the factory motor. How would I go about finding one? Make friends with a person living in Japan? What about down under in the outback? Did australia get 12at motors also?

Making a friend in Japan would be of little help, they rarely come on the market at present as most went into Cosmos which were wrecked many years ago when they lost their status to the Skyline. I have not seen one advertised in Japan during the past six months. Up to about five years ago they were occasionally available for around $1000-1200 in stock form without ecu and gearbox. Most were low mileage but would need a strip down and refresh before being used for serious performance upgrading.

No car with a 12AT was exported to Australia apart from very few second hand. three years a stock RX-7 GT fetched around US $8-9,000 on Jap ebay. When the first second hand 12AT came on the market several were bought by Aussie RX-3 owners who could not get roadworthy certificates for the 13BT. Occasionally one comes up for sale, last year I say one for US$ 4,500 in top condition. As they cost more than the 13BT most people now go down that route. A few were brought into New Zealand, I saw one for sale sometime ago for US$2,500 in stock form needing a rebuild.

Megasquirt is the cheapest standalone system. Haltech, Microtech, etc. start at twice the price. Chances of finding an oem harness are slim, none and probably quite pricey.

rre they may be, but I see the Series 3 12aT motors on eBay all the time. Usually they're complete with harnesses and ECU's, but here's a recent example ... although not complete.
