To port, or not to port....
A mechanic who has worked on lots of FB's showed me a complete nikki carb/intake setup he has that is already streetported. Since mine is running fine right now, I hate to mess with it, but it is tempting. $200 for the unit, probably $100-$150 for the install.
What would you guys do, or should I ask questions?
Thanks, I'm really ignorant on this issue.

Sounds like a waste of money to me... if you want an different carb setup, why not save up a little bit more and get something worthwhile like a Weber, Dellorto, Holley or Yaw Nikki? Otherwise, if your Nikki is working fine, just leave it.
Have a look at the current porting thread that's going on; you'll get a much better idea of what it is.

Thanks all, thats what I suspected, but I didn't know enough about it. I'll just leave mine alone until I need an engine rebuild or something. Thanks again!

You can be lucky. I bought a modified Nikki which included mechanical linkage, a modified manifold and K&N filter from a well known forum member. it was a very simple bolt on installation and produced a noticeable improvement in performance.
The moral is if the person knows what they are doing, it could be worthwhile, and installation would be quick and simple.
Street ported was obviously the wrong term to use, perhaps what was intended was an indication its a street level modification and not a cranky high performance carb with all the performance at the top end. If you are going to have the engine ported later on, you will still need the carb modified and getting it done now my be a good first step.

My problem with this is that, $200 is a lot to spend for a more or less stock carb. I got my Dellorto setup for $300, which will kick major *** over any Nikki other than perhaps a Yaw.

The Nikki carb has quite a bit of potential, it can be successfully modified up to the level required for an effective streetport.
Before Paul Yaw came on the scene, the records show extemely good results over many years by numerous tuners. Most of these were local, and pre-internet their successs was not common knowledge outside their own racing fraternity.
Paul Yaw is one of many, but he has achieved internet fame, has taken a research oriented approach, and going nationally has some 200 modified carbs to his credit.
If I was looking for more than 180hp from a NA 12a, I agree look at a Dellorto, Weber, Holley set-up.
But out there there must be hundreds of well modified Nikki carbs giving good results on the street and track.
It may be a personal concern but too many posts give a too costly response. It is easy to respond to 'how can I improve the performance of my 12a' with 'drop in a 13bt streetported engine'. I can get better performance in my daily driver by buying a Ferrari , but I prefer sunrise red.
