petty starting issues

this is all in an 85 GSL-SE 5spd completely stock

i think it's just a cold starting issue but i haven't paid close enough attention to my starting conditions so i'm a bit unsure. whenever i start it cold, the engine starts fine then shoots up to ~2500-3000 rpm then falls back down and the descent slows when it approaches idle then falls down to stalled out unless you blip the throttle then everything is just fine after that.

i'm gonna check it tomorrow after work to see if it does it hot too. i know i need to replace the spark plugs and the coils but i don't think that has to do with my start up trifle. i'll have more tomorrow.

On a cold start, the engine is supposed to have a fast idle. Try depressing the throttle pedal before turning the key, that should engage the cold start-high idle cam.

it's not the high idle that is the problem. it that it starts, goes up, settles at 1000 for a half second then falls to zero

He's telling you the correct procedure to start an Se. When it is first started, cold or hot you depress the pedal to the floor to set the fast idle cam. When the engine gets to operating temp then the idle will return to normal.

so if i don't set the high idle cam before i start, then will it not die when i start it? the idle is fine it just dies when i start it unless i blip the throttle after starting it.
