passing emissions

passing emissions
greetings group,
my question didn't get too much response in the canadian forum and i am hoping people here can help me out further.
i am finally buying an 84 se on tuesday. the car is located in quebec where emissions testing is not necessary. the car is registered in ontario where testing is required.
i am from ontario. but for the next while i'll be living in quebec (for sure into the new year). furthermore the car has passed provincial safety in quebec but will need to be checked in ontario.
i am not afraid of getting safety-ed but i am afraid of the emissions test. should i go through the red tape of switching everything over to a quebec perspective, just to avoid the test or should i go ahead and try to pass?
if it helps, the car is originally from las vegas, rebuilt motor (50 000 miles), no modifcations. never been driven in winter -a practise i will continue.
thanks to all the members here for their insight (as i've been lurking here for awhile in anticipation of my purchase) and thanks to rxtasy for responding to the original post.

Hey,
Here's what I think you should do. The Ontario Drive clean program is pretty tricky to get by if your car has been modified at all, which, funny enough, many RX-7's are. If you try passing, you may or may not get through, and then you're stuck. The key is to get it plated first, then, if you don't pass, you can always pay the $200 thing that allows you to pass the test with high emissions, and then drive it away. If it's not plated, it has to pass in order to get it on the road.
If you can move from Quebec, and keep it plated, you're all set, but if you find out that you have to e-test it, and that you can't get it plated first, then try this out. Move to somewhere like Kincardine for a day, change your license address over, and go get it plated, then move back to wherever you live. The Drive Clean program hasn't reached anything north of Peterborough (as far as I know). I think there's also some rural areas south of Peterborough too, but I'm not sure. The Drive Clean sight has a postal code check to see if your in one of the danger zones.

I'm still wondering if anyone will try mixing denatured alcohol with the gas in their 7 to pass emissions. So far, no one has posted to say they tried it. Not that I'm recommending it. My buddy did it with a Honda and halved his Hydrocarbons and passed. Not sure how long it would take to cause irreprairable damage, if any.
So why do I keep mentioning it????
Must be a sick sense of humor.
But actually, the reformulated gas here in Calif is using more and more alcohol as an oxygenate. So how bad could it be?
My 13B is smog exempt. So...dont' ask me to try it.

Hey, I just took my mom's car in for her e-test. It failed the first time, we did a diagnostic, and it turned out to be a vaccuum hose. That's the most expensive vacuum hose I've ever bought (counting the diagnostic)!
Anyway, it's not an RX-7 though. I took my RX-7 in a little while ago to e-test it and it failed, I'm missing my air pump, and my three way cat. If you're missing those, you just won't pass! Midas quoted me a price on a new air pump, it was only $1300 or something like that, not too much.
Anyway, check for your air pump, and make sure it's pumping air down to your cat, if you have that, and it's working, you shouldn't have too much of a problem.. except if you have a vacuum hose leak..
