Paint tends to crack and flake off, even if the plastic has been treated.

Exception: 'hard' plastics like the center console

I've painted a few of the black panels in my 83 with good results. Granted its only been 2 months, but its still holding up nicely. I just used some model airplane spray paint with standard primer as a base, topped it off with a few coats of clear. Your biggest problem is gonna be finding a color that matches.

the 2 months is the key. In 6-8 months it'll be falling off.

We'll have to see. The panel was faded really badly and I felt like experimenting. I don't see why it would fall off though. Its primed really well, and those panels don't really flex a whole lot.

Yup.

I did an AWESOME two tone crimson and black.

Take off (as much as you can anywyas) the plastic pieces on teh door panels (Seperate them from the fabric, or at least mask off the fabric).

Go to Napa and buy their Vinyl spray, in gloss black.

Spray paint all the plastic pieces you can.

It looks nice. Here is how my setup was:

Door top vinyl piece, following back to the side panels behind the doors, trim around the windows, back wheel well covers, trim around the center back pieces (leaving the middle red), armrest black, center console black, change tray black, black shift boot, black shift ****, black e brake, black seat adjust levers, black glove box latch, black center cap on the steerign wheel (it didtn match the wheel, but its better than the puke green it was before). the trim around the storage bins, the carpet holder thing directly above the storage bins (you can see that here:

http://users.pullman.com/jsjensen/io...ture%20004.jpg

and you can also barely see the door panel piece here:

http://users.pullman.com/jsjensen/io...ture%20002.jpg

(far left, there just a little blip of it)

So yeah. I highly reccomend it.

I'm' doing a black/grey/silver w/ my new GSL-SE w/ the grey interior, i'm doing the exact same thing only w/ grey as the base color.

Another thing i would reccomend is to paint the bottom half of the dash , as in, the panels BELOW the glove box, BELOW the steering wheel... get what i'm sayin? I'm still tryin to figure out how to get the ******* off... so ******* hard.

Also, paint the side vents black. Yay for black.

Peace
Geoff

i've painted all the plastics in my car

i used a black plastic/bumper paint so it was flexabe
u just have to give it a VERY light sand. dont wana scrach it then spray a few pretty thin coats..

and on my arm rests (series one) i used some black shoe polish.. sounds funny but that paint is made to stick to leather, made to flex, and should rub onto ur hands like a paint could. shoe is constantly flexing and the scuf stuff doesnt crack

Yeah on the napa stuff, its flexible, and it does NOT come off on your hands and stuff.

It has been in 100+ heat, with sweaty hands on it all day, not a rub off at all. Except on the shift **** (to be expected) after about 3-4 monhts, it starts to flake off a little, however i've never noticed the flakes anywhere, it just dissapears a little bit at a time.

But i highly reccomend painting the interior. I'm fully customizing mine. I'll take pics when i'm done.

Peace
Geoff

Vinyl paint sucks, check out this thread.

This method works much better, and is cheaper to boot. -Mike

Plasticoat's Ultra Vinyl spray is awesome. I used it on many things, and have nothing but good things to say about it.

You can get is from any local auto parts store. (They have a reg. one, don't get that one, make sure it says "Ultra" on it.

I'm using the Napa vinyl spray for the flexible stuff, and i'm going to use a new FoliaTec dye for the hard stuff.

Peace

Vinyl and Fabris spray has worked wonder for me. I ahve re-done everything in my car with black spray.. Dachboard, doors, everything... I hace seen in a few cases on my friends cars that it will peel off. I havent had a single problem with it peeling in my car. As long as you clean the surfaces to be painted before they are sprayed, the paint should stick without any peeling problems.. Just my .2 cents... -Rotary-Rex

hmmm, since this thread has been dragged back to the front page I'll reply to it, manntis, its been over 5 months since I painted the rear panel, in front of the tail lights, and its still shines like the day i installed it. No cracks, peeling, flaking, nothing. not saying its going to last forever, but it lasts longer than 2 months thats for sure.
