yeah,

That is your heater hose. The coolant hoses in that area are more subject to failure since oil can drip on them when changing the oil filter or adding oil. I had the same thing happen on my SE once. Eveything was cool and all of a sudden the temperature started increasing fast. I was close to a store so I got 2 gallons of water so that I could make it to the parts store to get a new hose. It was like you said, as I added water it just ran right out of that hose and on to the ground.

When you checked your coolant level, did you check the level in the radiator or just in the overflow bottle? It could be that there is a hole in the overflow line, or the line could be clogged, or a bad radiator cap causing the overflow not to work correctly.

Thanks to all who helped me out, finally zeroed in onto the problem. Now, I just need to get a replacement hose and I'll be on my way!

Here's the tear-

Aside from that, are these hoses standard, or do I have to get them from Mazda?

That rupture looks just like mine did. You can either get the hose from Mazda or a local auto parts store. The Mazda one will be more expensive and they would probably have to order it, but it will fit nicely. I just got some heater hose from a local auto parts store. Just take in your old hose so that you can get the correct diameter and length.

Glad to say the car is running again

I went to Mazda to get a new hose, they said it was backordered and would take the bare minimum of 5 business days to get it in. So, I managed to pick up some regular heater hose and got it to work kink-free

So, all is well....for now

Once again, thanks to all who helped.

I am by no means an expert, but that looks like too much coolant to be an engine re-build.... especially if you don’t see a lot of white some after a warm engine. I think there is a leak some where that is boiling of the block. But that is my un-educated opinion. Look for some leaks… I am surprised you do not see a drop in the coolant level. Did you check both under the radiator cap (when cool) and the reservoir?

Nah, that hose is just old and shot. They start to swell and boom they go, mine is kinda looking swelly too. Also that hose clamp was on there way too tight.

On a sidenote, I'm taking the bus to school tomorrow
Upon getting a new used 7 I immediately change ALL the fluids: sump, transmission, rearend, cooling system, clutch hydraulics, brake hydraulics, etc. Nothing reveals potential problems faster and gives you a chance to plan maintenance strategy. Also solves problems (I've found almost -empty transmissions, and really foul gear lube and coolant that would have led to problems later).

Also replace all filters.

Do not continue the dreadful neglect that most of these poor dears have been subjected to!

did you get this figured out

I had a similar problem with my rx about 10 years ago. I could start it up and it would overheat within a mile or so. Eventually it progressed to the point where it wouldn't start. Someone told me to try pouring oil down the carburetor to see if it would start. It did but only ran about a mile before overheating and shutting back down. It was said to me that I had the equivalent of a warped head. I did a search and it brought me to this thread. So I was hoping for some input on the problem? thanks

Have you looked in the radiator? I had a Mazda boinger that had oil getting into the cooling system, and made a milkshake in the radiator.
