Overheating??????????

Well in my tweaking efforts on the emissions see threads, https://www.rx7club.com/vforums/show...threadid=16122 and https://www.rx7club.com/vforums/show...hreadid=16266.

The POS Racer is now getting hot, it’s blowing fluid trough the lid of the overflow tank. So far I’ve put a new cap on it, which didn’t help. The water pump isn’t leaking. I am waiting for it to cool down to check the thermostat, which I had replaced a couple months back. Anything else I should look at?

Never really had any overheat problems since I got the car so I’m a bit perplexed.

As always I appreciate the guidance!

Well I had the same problem 4 years ago. I first change out the cap, with no luck, then the Thermo, with no luck, I then changed the temp sensor. By the time I found the problem the ingine was going out. It was a clogged radiator. Get a new one off of ebay for about 105.00 and change it out, then fill it up with distilled water and antifreeze (50/50). This will protect not only your radiator but your engine too, and allow it to run a few degrees cooler.
P.S. Make sure your fan is turning strong. If the clutch goes out it will llok like it is spinning but when you rev it up you will not notice any air flow increase from it.

your thermostat is probably stuck open, as you probably know a fully open thermostat (constantly) on a rotary will cause you to overheat unless you plug up that bypass, my thermostat stuck open and i overheated so i changed it out with a high temp one and fixed the problem.
good luck

Found it!
It was the little hose that comes out of the back of the water pump and goes into the throttle chamber (13B)! I could hear the car sucking air, and when I’d try and fill the radiator it would glut the water back out! Finally pulled on the hose a bit and it hissed like a rattler! Does anyone know where the 2nd hose that comes out of the throttle chamber go? Figure I might as well change it also. Looks like both hoses have been with the POS Racer for all of its 123,000 miles! Looks like they will be a b!#ch to replace.

I really appreciate all your help guys!

I pulled the thermostat it appears to be O.K., figure I’ll change it anyhow! What temp thermostats do you guys run? I got a 180 in I believe. I’ll try the E-Bay radiator, it was on my list of too list anyhow!

Mine is either a 180 or 195. I want a 160 though. And I may be wrong but I never heard of a car overheating due to the thermo being stuck all the way open. I could see if it is stuck closed. If it is stuck open or missing the thermo altogether the car will just have a hard time reaching the normal operating temp.

Pittdp, is ebay they best way to track the radiator guys down? Or do they have their own website?

Well I replaced the radiator and the cap, she ran for about 10-15 minutes and blew antifreeze out of the overflow again. I’m going to let it cool of and then going to replace the thermostat.

Still no sign of antifreeze in the oil, nor is their the smell of antifreeze when it is running. It sure seems like something in the cooling system is blocked, but haven’t found it yet.

I’m real discouraged at this point.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

O.K. I have tested the thermostat; it doesn’t open, even when the water in the pan is boiling. We don’t have a good thermometer for measuring water temp, since they spark in the microwave. But we have a fair one that was reading about 190ish degrees,

How far should it open if it could? We could see just a glimpse of light between the housing on one side!

I’m betting this means my “Newish” thermostat is garbage.

What do you think?

It should be open all the way by 190.
