Over torqued tension bolts.

Put another motor together but I didnt have my torque wrench handy today. I tightened the tension bolts by "memory" and later picked up my T wrench. When I checked it was tightened to about 85lbs. If I remember correctly 28lbs of torque is correct. Can I just loosen the bolts and torque to proper specs? Can I expect future problems with this rebuild?

I am by no means an expert, but I think if you loosen them now then the water seals will fail in the near future.

On the other hand, I'm wondering if something will break when the engine heats up and starts trying to expand. Good question...

28-30 ft-lbs is the range you want. If it is a high performance engine, torque up to 40 ft lbs. 85 ft lbs is around what Robert from rotary shack torques his to, and his puts out 800 some HP at the wheels. You are WAY too tight. You might consider buying a new gasket hit and doing everything over. Something will probably let loose with that much tension.

I would back the tension bolts off in reverse order of tighting, in 20 ft-lb increments, down to 15 ft-lbs. Then re-torque in proper order to 28-35 ft-lbs, in 2 trips around the engine. If you haven't fired up the motor, you should be ok.

By over torqueing the tension bolts, you have stretched them pretty good, but I doubt if the o-rings are smashed, since they sit in thier own groove and should not be between the housing and irons anyway.
