Ok, I took the Steering Wheel off to help me get the Guages out

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=286111

There is the thread where I was given the advice to take the Steering Wheel off.

Now the Steering Wheel is off but I still Can't get the Guages out.

I took the Clear Plastic Piece out but still to no prevail.

Any other suggestions? I'm afraid I'm going to break it.

Can you be more specific, such as is the cluster loose in the opening, does it feel like it is being held by the wires in the back, or does it feel like one or more sides are still attached, or what?

Why do people have trouble taking things apart or am I naturally destructive? You did not have to take the steering wheel off and you should probably leave the plastic on to protect it. If you want extra room, lowering the steering column would probably be easier than pulling the steering wheel anyhow. Take out the trim ring piece that goes around the inside of the dash opening, and there are only a couple screws holding the instrument cluster gauges in. Once you get those out you should be able to feel it wiggling around being held by the electrical connectors and speedometer cable in back. Unhook those and it should come out. I recall crawling up under the dash, maybe that isnt necessary though.

Great, I found this Link, I'm going back into the Garage and trying it again. Thank you Cosmic Bang, I think All I have to do now is undo the Speed ometer cable and wire hook ups. Now to figure out how to get the Speedometer cable off.

You might be able to get enough extra slack in the speedo cable to unhook it from the front. If necessary going under the car and push the some more of the cable through the firewall.

hehehe...

I laugh only because I've been there... never took off the damned steering wheel, though!!!

All you have to do is put the hazard switch between on and off so that it is almost level.

take out the screws from the front and from the back... get a flashlight to find the two in back.

Apparently, you got the speedo cable off... wiring now-

there are 2 tabs on each bundle. grab them and squeeze. then wiggle up and down. you'll get it. It's really not that hard.

BTW- you should be able to pull the instrument cluster out enough to do this without reaching your hand up under the dash. That's the only reason I can think this may be so dang hard for you...

If you have any more questions....

Damn! So that's what I did wrong!
::sheepish grin::

Though I did also get it out without removing the steering wheel.

Any Clue to how I can get those Wire Harness's off? It's a VERY Tight fit to get my hands behind them and they don't seem to be giving any slack. I got the Speed-ometer cable off. Just need to get the wire harness off and I'll be able to start replacement.

All you have to do to get the harness off it to pull hard on the back of them. THey are tight untill you get them off the first time. To help you get some slack take the hazard switch thing out or loose. and you can see the wires back in there that you can play with. You should be able to get a good amount of slack, so you can get your hands back there. It just takes time.. don't flip out.. you can do it. Put the plastic piece back on, you don't need to have the off just yet. It will help you get it out and not break anything. It doesn't obstruct taking it out.

Oh and on the steering wheel, mine absolutely would not come off, if I had it in there.. the 84-85 model gauges atleast. With a grant wheel. I think I had to take the adapters plate off to for the wheel.

I think there are two connectors on the back of the gauge and one speedo cable.

Ok, Update......................

I FINALLY got the Guages out of the Dash. Seems that the Rear Wire Harness's were hung up on the Metal Hooks that intercept the guages. THAT'S Why I didn't have ANY room. I mean my Arms and wrists are tore up because I could Barely squeeze anything in behind the guage assembly.

Now. I went to Auto Zone and bought some Red Touch Up paint and painted my Guage needles for better Contrast. Wiring everything up now
