Ok guys...help me to understand the ring and pinion adaptability issue
I have been looking for a 4.44 ring and pinion for my '84 race car. I have the stock 3.90 in it. I have noticed that the rear end has "83" written on it which leaves me to believe that the rear end came from a junkyard for the rear discs. Now...will a 4.44 ring and pinion from ANY first gen. fit in my rear end? Not the whole third member...just the ring and pinion? I was also told that the 84-85 had bigger axle shafts...but I believe my rear end is from an 83...so this should not matter right? The bottom line is, does anyone know if the ring and pinion from ANY first gen will fit my rear end no matter what year?

1st-gen RX-7s use a "standard" 7" Mazda diff. The onyl cars with a 7" that don't interchange are FCs, RX-2s, and non-SP RX-3s. That means RX-3 SP, SA, FB, Miata ('94-up), many trucks, and the S2000 can all interchange gearsets. I forget if the RX-8 uses the 7" or the 8".
