This will help. Just remember, when using a stock flywheel, you must match the rotating assembly with the flywheel. A factory first gen flywheel will not work with an S4 13b because the rotating assembly weight is different. If your using an aftermarket lightweight flywheel, you will need to corresponding S4 automatic counterweight.

Standard and turbo s5/s4 is a 225mm flywheel and clutch PERIOD. ALL NA starters are the same basically. EXCEPT s4/s5 starters added the drain on the bottom and the top starter bolt is threaded to eliminate the nut at the top.

79-82 is a 215mm flywheel.

S4/s5 turbo trans and auto trans use the same starter but its different from the NA.

The counterweight matches the engines rotating assembly has nothing to do with clutches or transmissions or bell housings.

Yes 13b 225mm you have is right. You need a s4 counterweight and your good to go. You can use the 12a starter

Don't see why you can't use the 82 12a trans. I used an 85 in an 82

idk im just making sure cause they did the tranny style change in 83 to the block mounted slave cyl 82 is stilll bellhousing mounted and i was just being cautious and would it be beneficial to use a fc starter? like stronger last longer? i know my 85 starter gave me nothing but trouble melting my cables and the solenoid was always loose went through 2 of em cause of that crap...

I think the 13b starter sounds better. But your not really comparing apples to apples. 2 starters. One 12a one 13b I don't think reliability is really an issue. I've never really had trouble with either. I have four 12a starters on the shelf if you need one.

I think all of them were bell housing mounted. My S5 vert is, the s4 engine trans combo I put in my 83 is, my sons 85 trans is on the bell and so was the 79 trans I sold. Even the t2 trans I used for my Cosmo swap is bell mounted. The bolts strip out real easy. So when they are out I just drill tap and helicoil them anyway.
