MI oil smoke

The other day I asked here about oil smoke from the right front side of the engine compartment, several good ideas were presented, mainly omp leaking. If the omp is that little square thing with two lines to the carb, it is not leaking at all. So I ran the bejeebers out of my 85 GS yesterday, got it hot and put miles at fun style driving. Then when it did strt to smoke at stops, I went hunting with determination. The smoke is coming from the lower right corner, down by the engine mount???? Now what the heck is going on? Going to have to get it in the airand see what leaks there. Any good or wild ideas will be appreciated. Bob

Hell Bob, in a couple of weeks there will be several forum brains camping in my backyard. Just bring it over and have a beer with us, and we'll get it figured out.

Bob, it sounds like your front cover gasket is leaking. i have found many times the best way to diagnose the source of the leak is to (with the engine cool) clean the area very well with brake cleaner. ensure all of the old oil is off and you are down to clean metal on the front cover area and around the omp area and the lines. then take the car out and run it. put a few miles on it varying engine and road speeds. pull over and check the area once again for leaks or seepage. you will find the issue should be either the omp gasket, a leaking omp line(s) or a leaking front cover gasket. if the front cover is found to be the source of the leak, i reccomend removing the engine and replacing the gasket while the engine is sitting flywheel side down.

If the OMP is that square hicky with two tubes running to the carb, It isnt leaking anywhere around it, going to remove the heat shield over the exhaust alongside the right side of the engine(run on sentance NAH ), then clean and explore further. Bob

bob, removing the heatshield may not help you at all. have you cleaned and inspected the front cover area? its usually the source of all frustrating leaks..that or the oil level sensor o-ring..if you could call it that..

Bob, I am new here, but I also am dealing with an 85 GS of my own with the very same problem. At first I thought it was coolant. Then after replacing the upper and lower rad hoses, taking off the intake mani and replacing the o rings and gasket, and putting everything back together, the smoke was worse. I had pictures and someone said that it looked like oil and they said that it might be leaking. To that I ordered an OMP rebuild kit (amazing, btw) from pineapple racing's website. Now that everything is installed and in working order, the smoke is even worse after that. I double checked the area that I had repaired and nothing is leaking in either spot. However, it does look like the oil pan gasket on that side is leaking. behind the exhaust manifold i took some shop towels and sopped up some of the now horribly leaking mess and most of it was brand new oil, go figure. I have read that the oil pan gaskets are a recalc, whatever that means, maybe they mean a recall, requires specific torque settings, and should be sealed with silicone sealant. odd to think, since silicone doesn't decintigrate for 75 years, but that's my next step. I hope this helps you out.

from the factory, the 7 never had an oil pan gasket. mazda used a gray sealer which holds up well. over time the metal expands and contracts on the oil pan an it requires new sealant or an actual gasket. i always use mazda oem gaskets with a small bead of sealer per the fsm and i've had great luck with that. hope that helps a little.
