Oil Pressure Sensor

Hey everyone I have done a search and didn't find anything to help so here I go.
I had my oil pressure gauge go a little crazy reading hi and low #'s Then it quit working all together. I ordered a new one from blackdragonauto.com (http://blackdragonauto.com/icatalog/z/0113.asp) The new part is bigger and the hole is a lot smaller. And to boot I still have no oil pressure. Do you think it is the wrong one? Are they different from year to year? Is there a needle that fits in that hole? Well any help would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance

what year is your car? and theres a chance the old one wasnt bad, just the sending unit contacts needed to be cleaned. as far as i know they are all the same from year to year, but im sure ill be corrected, however it could be that the poece is coming out in two pieces and you not realizing it. seems like it did that to me. can you get any pictures of it??

My car is a 84 GS . Im sure that i got it out right. But like I said... That hole is smaller than the original one. There isn't like a needle in where it screws in? would the size make any difference?

Have you tried to ground the connector to the sender? If so, the gauge in the car should spike. That will tell you if the gauge is working. Did you put teflon tape or anything like that on the threads of the new sender? If so, it may not be getting a good ground connection. The unit size and the size of the hole does not matter. It is just aftermarket instead of OEM.

Do you have a DMM (Digital Multimeter)? If so, you can test the resistance of the sender. You can also use the DMM on the sender while the car is running to see if resistance changes as compared to when it is not running. If it changes, the sender works and you do really have oil pressure. Then the fault would be in the wiring or the gauge.

Maybe you need to buy an OEM sender. That aftermarket one may not be correct for this application. Parts sellers can get things wrong you know.

test your sender, and the rest of the circuit at once. I rigged up a fitting from my compressor hose to take the threads of the sender, set the compressor to about 60/70psi, connect a peice of wire to the guage stem( I just twisted it tight around the stem)and to a known good ground on the car, and connect normal connection to the guage head, turn car to on DO NOT START THE CAR the guage should read zero(what a suprise no pressure). connect charged commpressor hose to special fitting, and you should see a reading on the guage in the car. if not check your ground wire have some one whatch the guage . this will send a signal to the guage if connected correctly to a working guage, i found my oil pressure issue to be a bad peice of wiring, I cleaned the connector, and then I had to cut 2" out of the wire going to the head of the guage and reconnect the connetor to the wire(wire only has few strands left actually connected), perfect pressure reading, with the old and the new sensor, re: the after market guage if it reads correct in the car then go with it.

Mine did this, i fixed it by cleaning the whole sending unit area of oil and replacing it with a fresh oil sending unit from advanced. The other problem might be the wires on the right side of the engine bay, believe it or notr, the second time my unit "failed" i went through and reconnected all the wires to the right places, and BINGO!, My oil pressure gauge worked and my warning buzzer. Go figure.

make sure the odd looking connector goes to the sender unit, clips on sideways not straight on, it should be only one that fits the sender easily, if the sender wire has a broken casing to a ground this may be causing this reading.
