Oil Pressure Problems ? This Normal?

Can having too much oil, say 1/2 quart or more over make ur oil presure go up and down, stays at 60 when i go slow in a low gear but when i open it , oil presure goes down to like 10 , even worse when i use the choke on cold start, engine is very well maintained, 93k on it. When i go to open the throttle damn pressure drops, dont open and let it in low rpm pressure goes back up? Anyone have some ideas or senarios! thanks

yeah im actually having the same problems. oil pressure won't stay constant. goes between 10 and 60, sometimes down to 0. not quite sure what to do about it.

Maybe your oil pump is going out? If you've got low oil presure...you shouldnt drive it! I'll be back let me get my book. Is it a 12A or 13B?

Never mind, if it has a choke its got to be a 12A, unless you"ve modified it.

Okay, I got my book! Oil presure at 3000 rpm should be 4.5 2.7 kg/cm {64 to 78lb/in}- At idle 0.9 to 2.7 {13 to 38 lb/in} Hope that helps!

First suggestion from me would be for both of you guys (the ones with the oil pressure fluctuations) to go down to BAP/PEP/NAPA and pick up a replacement Oil Pressure Sending Unit for about $20.

On our cars, the 20 y/o senders have a tendency of getting very erratic in their old age which can lead to you troubleshooting an 'oil pressure' problem that is simply your gauge not reading correctly. The OPS is located on the drivers side of the engine block, just below the oil filter tower, and is a big, brass 'mushroom' shape. It can be unscrewed from the block using a 12mm open-end wrench (at the base of the mushroom), and then replaced with your new unit. A single-lead wire attaches to the 'tip' of the mushroom for the signal to the ECU and the gauge on the dash.

After you replace this part, I'll bet dollars to donuts that your oil pressure 'problems' are gone. The oil pumps on these cars (particularly the larger one on the SE's) very, very rarely go out. Usually, if you're really losing oil pressure, it's from an oil cooler line, or a leak somewhere that should make itself pretty obvious. If the oil's staying in the engine and not on the ground, you probably have sufficient oil pressure.
