Question Oil Pressure Problems

I have an '83 GSL and my oil pressure seems to be acting odd. Under nomal conditions it is around 30 at idle and 60 at speed. sometimes i can be driving and all of the sudden the pressure drops to nothing. I just replaced the intrument cluster about a month ago and everything seemed fine.

i am going to get a hand held oil pressure tester so i can see if it is the car or the gauge or perhaps the sending unit.

My problem is how to hook up the tester. i have the shop guide, and i think i can see where to hook it up but have no idea how i am supposed to get in there.

has anyone done this? i could really use some help!

thanks

Problems with the guages usually stem from a bad connection only. The cluster would be the last thing I would look at. THere are two things under the hood to look at. 1. the sender unit wire may have a intermittent open 2. The reference signal resistor that is near the rear of the engine on the metal inpection cover may have a intermittent open.

Since you said it works sometime, its definitely a wire sometimes loose.

i replaced the cluster last month because the oil pressure, fuel and temp were all not working, been broken for years..... with the replacement in everything seemed to be working fine and then last friday the oil pressure started acting odd...all that to say that i agree i don't think is is the gauge.

thanks for your suggestions on what to look at, i will check these when i get home!
