oil pressure mods

Ive started the tear down of my rx7. Basic cleaning/stripping/maintnence stuff until i get her road ready and painted then its going to be turbo'd. Just last night I notice that the oil fill tube was all rusty, and i (dont ask) broke chunks of my oil cap off into the engine. So off the pan has to come... While im in there im going to crush the ROPR with my press, shim the FOPR and drill and tap the front cover. What else should I do while im in there? I read something about removing the pick up screen and trumpeting the pickup, whats that about? also, if you look where the tube was pressed into the engine, its full of rust from getting the tube out, how can i clean that? sorry for the longish post

Hi there

I did remove the screen and added a trumpet.

It was quite hard to figure out the correct lenght, plus you cant leave a singe hole while welding, cause if you do, it wont generate vacumm to suck the oil

is it necessary to do? id rather just crush the regulators to up the pressure a bit, without modding the pickup tube. I dont really even understand what its done for

no. it is not necessary to modify the pickup tube.

i've never done it myself, but i'll take a stab at the reason as for why it's done. i'd guess it's about flow going to the oil pump. i imagine it's kind of acceleration you get with air using air horns in a throttle body or plenum.

be sure to put a dab of silicone on the OPT flange to ensure that the motor is not suckng air but 100% oil thru the OPT

Have it brazed, it'll penetrate real nicely all the way around. For length, I put the thick washer flush with the end of the tube. And only a few spot welds holding the screen on.
