oil pressure issue, Any thoughts?

so before anybody gets on me for this i did search i couldn't really find anything that was similar enough to my problem, perhaps i didn't search well enough tho.
anyways, i have an 84 gs+ with a fmoc from an 81 car. the oil pressure is zero at idle. and never gets to be more than the hash mark that isn't labeled, 40 i think.
Im going to change the oil soon to the winter weight of 10w-30 even tho it hasn't really started to get cold here. there hasn't really been any change it the engine's
behavior, but then again its a new to me car, and the gauge has always been reading that. replace the sensor/sending unit (i'm not sure if those are two different
parts or one part by two names) and go from there? do oil pressure regulators go bad? or more likely the oil pump?

If you infact had zero oil pressure and had drivin on it, the engine would be dead

so, you either have a sender issue, or a gauge issue

well i guess it's not quite on the zero mark, but still, thankyou, i'll check it the first chance i get. is that first unlabeled but thicker hash mark on the gauge where the needles is supposed to be or is that the minimum?
