I am not sure, but usually, the center of the gauge is the correct place.
One thing though, take the reading with a grain of salt, the Mazda Oil Pressure gauges are notoriously slow to respond, and usually wrong. Many of them have problems with the electrical connections to the engine as well.
If it is really imprtant to you, get an aftermarket one to have substantially more correct read-outs.
Sorry I still don't know the answer to you initial question..

Yeap, I'd say the connections to the engine are bad. I've had this same thing happen to me. As long as the sender unit is connected to the wire good, and the reference resister signal wire is hooked on good, you'll get between 60-70psi.

Well i got an autometer gague in mine and i like to think that it is accurate. at 3000 rpm warm engine I will be around 60psi. At warm idle I tend to be 20psi. At 7500 rpm I am pushing 85-90psi. Dont know if this is any help for you, but I tried.

The wire connector on the end of the fuel pressure sensor gets dirty and fried. Check it first. There is a small orifice on the oil side. If it gets plugged up you won't have a good reading. Gumout can revive a plugged one sometimes.
