oil pan q???

i recently saw a 13b pported 1st gen race car at the track , after the first heat the engine started vibrating ,so they decided to change it, when they took the engine out i noticed the oil pan was nothing but a piece of flat sheetmetal??? is this common in race cars if so what are its advantages?

Must be a dry sump setup.

It's called a dry sump setup, and yes it is fairly common on some of the circuits.

Advantages are more consistant and predictable oil flow, especially during hard cornering, you can run a larger volume oil resivior. and some of them have dual filters.

If legal in the class you can also lower the engine in the chassis. The oil pickups are run out the front cover on either side and then go to a seperate tank where the air is seperated from the oil. We run a hybrid system with a stock oil pump in a stock pan that feeds the oil out to the tank. (we aren't allowed to lower the engine) It then goes through an external belt driven pump, to a filter, then to the coolers and then into the front and rear of the engine through seperate lines. The system holds about 12 quarts of oil. I'm not sure its worth all the weight and expense for most applications. The car I'm building now will just have the stock set-up, two stock coolers and a big accusump. Its great for piston engines because it keeps the crankshaft out of the oil which can suck HP.
