Oil Level?

I changed my oil a little over 2 months ago and put in a little MMO with it. My car smokes blue when shes cold and i start her up, so she appears to be burning oil, but my oil level hasnt changed at all in the past 2 months. Bad or good i dont know, wat do u think?

From what I've heard and based on what I see in my car, if you see a little blue smoke on warm-up you're fine. A car this old the seals are not always going to be perfect. If it's warmed up and you still see blue smoke..then, you got some possible problems.

I wouldnt be too worried about the smoke on start up. Even when i got my new engine it did that. I believe its Oil that runs into the motor and gathers until it gets burned out on start up.

Miles,,,,talk miles,,,, time means nothing. I believe the SE should burn a qt. of oil in about 2.5 to 3K (??) miles,,,,depending of course on the condition of the engine and how it's being driven.....

The rotory burns oil by design.

Just make seure that you check the oil once or twice a month. The dip stick is a bit of a PITA to read but once you get used to it you will be fine.

Here is another tip try to use a quality oil filter. Alot of people (myself included) only use the OEM oil filter from Mazda. It has a check valve affare in it that the cheep (ie. the orange ones=Fram) and other buddeget oil filters don't have. Appreantly NAPA oil filters are also suposed to be good.

Any way just way too much info and a bit off topic.

but your oil level should drop as your milage goes up.

have your oil metering pump checked to make sure it is injecting oil into the housing to lube the rotors at startup. I found my oil leak recently by having the 4 oil injector hoses replaced. Two were not working and looked mangled and melted and the other 2 were about to start leaking. Neither of the 2 GSL SEs that I have owned have ever used much oil. Both had/have 160K mi.

I don't think mileage driven is a good yardstick to check your oil consumption rate. The metering pump is designed to consume more oil at full throttle than cruise. If you drive long distances at relatively stable RPM (say around 3,000rpm)..consumption could be conceivably less than short WOT bursts gettin squirrly in your rex.

Here is the guideline to check the OMP discharge rates.. I use a metric fluid measuring tube (real cheap at the drug store). Make sure it reads in CC's... With the engine warm, disconnect the two metering oil pump tubes. Set engine speed at 2000 RPM while holding the tubes over the measuring tube. After six minutes you should have discharged 2 cc. Next-Hold the metering oil pump arm in the full throttle position while maintaining 2000 RPM. After six minutes you should have discharged 6 cc. You may want to get a dropper and squirt some fresh oil down the carb while you are doing this as well.

Hope this helps.

hmm i use purlator pure one on my car supposed to be a good one.. on miata.net there was a guy who posted a link to another guy who tears oil filters apart and then gives a write up on their quality. if i can find the link ill post it up here

Big Jim, glad you brought this up, I've been wondering about it too. I put in the MMO (8 ounces per 16 gal tank full) and ever since I started doing this I haven't had to add oil to the engine. I'm pretty sure the OMP is working, since before I added the MMO the car ran fine and I can see the oil in the OMP tubes. I read somewhere that most of the oil doen't burn during combustion and instead is recirculated, so maybe adding the MMO in the fuel replenishes the crank case oil?
