Yep, it has to be clutch or brake fluid. I can't speak for '83 cars, but I'm sure your oil gauge is electric, if it's stock. If you have actual engine oil getting inside your car you got some serious problems man. One way to check if it's engine oil is to check the temp of what ever your seeing.

its one of 2 things
1. speedo cable, there is a seal where it goes in the tranny, this goes bad and grea oil comes up the cable
2. the clutch master

Crawl up under and see where it's coming from... You'll see it clearly if it's clutch hydraulic fluid or if it's coming from the speedometer cable. (Does the tranny pump the oil that much that it would come allt he way up the cable?!? Damn.)
If it's the clutch cylinder, replace both the master and slave as they die at around the same time... Search for replacement proccedures, if you can't find them, one of us will tell you how to fix it... It's less than $100 for the entire set of slave and master if you shop right...
Also, Clutch hydraulic fluid should NOT be black if it is changed properly. It should be the same color as brake fluid, which shouldn't be black either. If they are black, they need to be changed more often.... Once every year or two is a good figure... I think it's actually .. Wait, nope, hold on... No thinking here... I've got my workshop manual on hand here...
Okay... Mazda reccomends inspecting Brake fluid every 15,000 miles (15 months) and replacing it every 30,000 (30 months)... Clutch fluid is just inspected every 30,000 miles (30 Months)... However, since they're the same fluid, I'd reccomend changing them at the same time.
Brake fluid absorbs and displaces moisture and debris in the hydraulic system. This is to prevent corrosion in the cylinders, rotting of the rubber seals, and scratching of the cylinder or piston surface. Over time, the fluid gets saturated with crap and looses it's effectiveness... Either it boils or freezes in temperature exptremes, or it allows the components to wear out faster... Just use a turkey baster (Hey! The one that you use for MMO/ATF treatments will work if you rinse it out well.) and empty the reivours into a waste bucket. Then fill it back up and bleed the hydraulic system till it comes out clear.

Pop open the hood and look at the clutch fluid reservoir..open it and take a whiff...woohooo now crawl under the dash and look where your clutch pedal goes up to, peel back the carpet and see if whats under the hood is the same. If it is I recommend buying a brand new clutch, slave or even brake master cylinder for that matter (if and when those go out). Rebuilds just arent as reliable
