Oil Injection

This is probably something thaqt has been posted before but I am curious as to where the oil that is injected into the carburetor comes from. The fellow that I work with used to have an RX-7 but he was unaware that this setup existed; I was also unaware until I read about it in various posts and in a Chilton's manual that just arrived from Ebay. I am guessing that it comes from the oil in the engine and if so, what sort of oil should be used in these cars and are there other things that might relate to this? This is a very broad question but when you do not know very much yet, they usually are BTW, I like the "rotary" smiley-face...

You are correct. The oil that is injected comes from the oil pan. It is injected using the OMP (Oil Metering Pump). You might also see it called MOP.

The main thing is to keep an eye on your oil level since you are using some oil. Many people do not know about the system and run the car low on oil becuase they never bother to check the level. Expect oil consumption to be about 1 quart every 500-1000 miles, but it varies depending on how you drive.

There are other options too. You can remove the OMP and premix your gas (like a 2-stoke weedeater or chainsaw). This way you know that you are always getting oil in the combustion chamber and gives better coverage, but it is a pain to measure out oil everytime you get gas. There are also systems that let you use the OMP, but draw the oil from a separate reservoir. This way you can use clean 2-stoke oil for the OMP (burns cleaner) and you don't consume the oil from the pan.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Kent

oil injection

Thank you, Kent! I just got another manual for the 'lil fellow and found what the little container of antifreeze was for; cold start. What exactly does antifreeze going into the carburetor do for starting? Does it burn? Lubricate? I have never heard of antifreeze carburetor injection and this is another of the odd to me things about this car. This thing is definitely full of wonders!!! BTW, I just found a thread about this; the oil injection for tailgaters sounds good :-) My Escort diesel already has such a system; rapidly "goose" the throttle and it will make an enormous black cloud that will kill every mosquito in the area and create a visibility situation like an octopus does under water (heh, heh, heh!)
