Oil filler tube rust!

Hey guys, I have a question for you all. I recently aquired an '80 SA which had been sitting for a few years. When I went to open up the oil cap, it wouldn't budge. I figured it had rusted, to I soaked it with every lubricant/rust breaker I had, but to no avail. I eventually had to break (!) it off, collecting the little peices, keeping them from falling down the tube. When all was said and done, I had about 26 peices of plastic filler cap and a rusted out filler tube. The car is about due for a 13B swap anyway, but what can I do to the filler tube to keep it from locking on another cap and dropping rust into the engine?

So you only had to break the cap right? I guess you could put some antiseize compound on a new cap and make sure you don't over tighten it when you put the new cap on. If you filler tube is really that bad you might want to replace it with one from the bone yard if you can find one. Hope that helps.

Too late now tho, But that whole tube will pull out, when you do a Mazda reman engine you have to pull it out and drive the old one in the new block with a rubber mallet

Good luck...

Just don't tighten it down as much. On my 88, I lost the oil filler cap when changing the oil and drove it around for about 2 weeks without one. That tube is so damn long, not even a tiny bit splashed onto the rag I had shoved in there. Tightening it down a bunch is useless, as long as it's still sitting on there you're golden.

I'd try and get a new one and scrap the old one when you get a new engine. How would you feel if someone stuck an old rusty tube down your snout?

I see why...all the engines I've bought had the tube already in place...he's talking about a rebuild jobber sans the tube...
