oil cooler swap questions

Hey guys i had a few questions...

first off if you dont know, my car is an 81 with an 83 engine (ie: BEEhive oil cooler) i was wondering... did the 81 come stock with the air/oil cooler? if so... will my oil cooler from my 85 gsl-se parts car bolt in where the original one was thus making it so i dont have to fabricate mounting brackets?...

also... when i decide to put in the air/oil cooler what all do i need from the se....

i know of course the oilcooler itself and the lines... anything else??

thanks..

Yes, the 81 came with an air-cooled oil cooler.

That's a good question. On my 85 GS, there are brackets on the frame designed specifically for the SE oil cooler. I'm sure that Mazda made all the 84 and 85 bodies with the mounts since those were the years that the SE was manufactured. I'm not sure if your 81 would have them, but there is one way to find out. Remove the black cover in front of the radiator. While looking down, you should see two mounts slightly in front of the A/C condenser on each side. This is where the SE oil cooler is mounted on SE models - in front of the radiator and below the condenser. To be honest, I doubt that you'll see them there - I think it was just on 84 and 85 cars.

Lets see.....the oil cooler, the oil hoses, and a filter pedestal. Also, since you are switching from water-cooled oil cooler to air-cooled oil cooler, you will have to purchase the heater line from a 79-82 or cut the "L" shaped section off of your current heater line. Again, I'm not sure about the mounts for the SE cooler being on your 81 - hopefully someone with a pre-84 will pop up and confirm this one way or another. Good luck

pre 84 cars don't have the mounts for the SE cooler as far as I know. The heater line should work from the SE.
