Oil cooler Question?

Got my oil cooler of yesterday and no cracks (hooray!) All I need are the brass washers for the fittings. My question is does anybody have a pic of the mounts so I can see what they look like? The cooler was just swinging on the frame. It looks like the rubber insulation was torn away from the top of the mount. Thanks! Where can I buy these mounts at?

I can't remember seeing them anywhere except from a dealer. Could be wrong though. I am shipping rx7doctor an oil cooler so if he isn't in need of the mounts he may be able to help you.

you didnt post your make or model or year of vehicle, but in this forum i assume were talking about a first generation rx-7, my father is a 37 year mazda service manager in Florida... i own 7 first generations.. 5 1984 gsl-se's and 2 85. ive owned alot of parts cars as well, my uncle owns the local junkyard so most of my cars are actually build from the junk found in the yards. there were 2 available oil coolers on the first generation rx-7, one topside and one bottom side attached to the bottom of the radiator. the least common was the topside so i assume your asking about the bottom side version. there are no available oil cooler mounts that any money can buy to replace the original. Why? the oil cooler mounts are physically attached to the cooler as a single unit. replacing the oil cooler is the way to replace the mounts. check the Mazdatrix.com website and look at the picture of the brand new oil cooler and you'll see that im right. the crush washers.. copper washers for the oil cooler lines are available there on that site as well. just a few bucks and mazdatrix ships fast. the best way to replace oil cooler mounts aside from allout replacement.... take it to a welding shop like i did mine and have 2, 2 inch corners welded to each side, drill em out, then drill em into the bar that sits just under and behind the bottom of the radiater.

What oil cooler did you get, is it off a Se or pre 83? the SE ones seperate from the rubber. All
you do is drill thru the rubber and mounts and insert 2 bolts to reattach them. If it is the pre 83 ones they are replaceable to the oil cooler and i have those. As far as the crush washers do not use copper they are aluminum washers.

I'm in Alexandria and going through the same painful process of removing it and reinstalling it - I've about got the beehive oil cooler off (need to find the 3rd nut to remove) and wait for the 3rd coolant hose I just ordered yesterday - on an 85 12a - replacing all 4 O rings + 3 coolant hoses (2 to the cooler and a 3rd (one I just decided to replace while I have this apart and ordered yesterday) that hooks to the T coming from the block (figured its best to change it now while the cooler is out vs. risk having to do it later), plus the washers (crush). Got my stuff (parts) from Malloy Mazda Woodbridge from Ray (who seems to know 1st gen 7s and gets the right parts, all but the O rings required special order) - he gave me an aluminum crush washer for the hard oil line where it mounts to the front of the engine (decided to remove the line there, since it was easier to get to) and 2 copper washers for the famous "banjo bolt" connection of the hard oil line to the cooler. Their prices were competive with other sources on the net, plus you save shipping if you drive to Woodbridge
Call Malloy and ask for parts & Ray - tell him Ron referred you (mention that he just ordered parts for my 85 12a, incl. the 3rd hose yesterday - he will treat you right)

There is now a posting in archives that gives very good pictures of the oil cooler out and separted for a beehive type cooler.

If you are working on an under the radiator type cooler, ignore what I have just said!!!

It's a bolt, and it goes into the top side of the motor, just behind, almost under the rats nest. It sits even with the filter, and is very well hidden unless you really look close.
Hope that helps

Thanks Rogue_Wulff, I got your earlier posting to me - I have just not had time to continue working on it, plus I am now waiting for the 3rd coolant line before continuing - so when I get greasy again, I hopefully can finish the job!!! Though I am not looking forward to the re-install!!!

Getting too old for this, bolts/screws in impossible to get to places!!!

Finding that one bolt is much easier if you have ever seen a pre-83 engine. It is even easier to see if the rats nest has been removed from a pre-83.
That info was in the post of mine that jon somehow manged to erase while transfering the other thread to the archive.
Good luck on getting all put back together, so you can enjoy driving your car.

Sorry for the confusion mine is a '85 SE. The cooler mounts are fine I mean the mounts that attach it to the frame. They have two 10mm nuts holding them to the car.

Highwayracer, you better check again. On the SE the mounts are rubber and ARE replaceable. They are not permanantly fixed to the cooler itself. I know, I just boxed one of them up to send to rx7doctor.
