Oil Cooler O-Rings Question

Quick, dumb question -

Are the oil cooler o-rings just generic rubber rings, or are they special? I'm thinking most of my oil leak is being caused by bad rings so I'm replacing them. After pulling the cooller off, I found two flat, brittle, plastic feeling rings. Are they supposed to be this way, or are they just ancient? Figured I'd better ask before I slap it together incorrectly and have to redo the job.

Generic O-rings are what you need, they should soft and flexible. the ones you pulled off probably look like plastic washers, huh?

Answer

No, they should not be brittle. I just got new ones at mazda, they are used on many vehicles. They only cost $6.00. My dealer had them is stock.

Crap...$6 for a set of o-rings? Is that just dealer screw or will a pair from my box-o-misc. parts just not fit quite right?

They were pretty bad when I got em off. My friend wondered if they were actually a rubber coated steel washer!

I suggest you PM Mike P-28. He has upgraded Viton o-rings, which are a vast improvement over the OE Mazda rubber ones. He'll mail you a couple for cheap.

The ones under the oil cooler that's under the oil filter are rubber. $6 for new ones is alot cheaper than rebuilding the motor after cheapo replacements don't fit right and fail.

The ones in the air to oil oil cooler under the radiator are copper or aluminum and I just buy them from Mazdatrix or the stealer.

Good point...no sense quibbling over a few bucks over getting the 'right' part. Have had to undo enough half-assed fixes already.

Do the copper rings typically fail? It looked alright to me, but if they tend to go bad, it probably wouldn't be a big deal to replace it.

I just went to H&S hardware and brought the old ones that had shrunk and the cooler mount with me. I found some that were exactly the same size for a couple of dollars. Although they were round and not flat. I havn't had any problems with it at all since then, Just make sure to get it back together as tight a humanly possible.

I can get you Viton o rings in that size, I actually have 2 in stock Viton is a LOT BETTER, a lot tougher O ring, you will never have a problem with these again.

How many you need ? Price is $1.25/ea

Plus shipping, I recommend USPS Priority for $4.
