Oil in the air filter..?
hi,
This weekend i cleaned my carburetor with carb cleaner (3000rpm and spray directly in the venturis) and after that i changed the air filter, the fuel filter and the spark plugs.
So, I take the 7 for a hard ride and when i came back, i check the engine if everything was ok and i found that the air filter (inside the blue filter box) was with oil. (not much but some)
I clean it up and take it for a ride again and i felt that in the 5000-7000rpm range dont worked very well so i get to my home and check the air filter again and i found more oil....so what`s happening?
Is this normal?
Thanks

Maybe because i drove it too hard the air filter box get too windy inside and the oil that rest in the oil reservoir of the nikki carb is getting sprayed!

I forget exactly what the stock air filter canister looked like on my 84 when i had it stock, but could it be coming from the breather tube? Another possibility is a backfire that forces some of the oil injected into the fuel bowls that coats the inside of the intake manifold back up through the carb...

A backfire couldn't cause that much oil. Did you happen to change or add oil during the other work? Check the dipstick for overfilling. Did you do anything with the vacuum lines on the carb or rat's nest? There is no oil reservoir in/on the carb and the MOP cannot supply that much oil to the carb is your runs were short. My first thought would be a fault in the PVC/purge valve, but that gets drawn in through the carb plate/spacer.
Clean up the oil again and start the engine with the air cleaner lid off. That may give you a clue where the oil is coming from. Do you notice any air pressure release when removing the oil fill cap?

Additionally, is your crankcase oil actually that dirty? Normal oil should not be black. It looks almost burnt.
Oil overfill, crankcase venting problems or combustion blowby into the crankcase are what come first to mind for me, too. The oil's getting ejected from somewhere with quite a bit of force behind it - - it's all over the lid.
I suggest you clean it all up, and then do some open-lid testing to see if you can actually spot exactly where it's coming from, and under what conditions (decel, accel, etc).
Only thing that's for sure; it's not normal.

Open lid testing in the afternoon; i will update some pics as soon as possible.
Just remember that i am in Lima, and my time zone is GMT-5 (USA Eastern Time).
I hope its not something inside the engine...!

I test it in the afternoon and nothing happen!
I remove the entire blue air filter case and after a warm up i rev the engine to 6 - 7 and nothing happens!
Tonight im going to a car meeting (not 7`s just a bunch of friends with cars). Its not far away but i will ride the 7 hard.
Maybe the problem will appear again. I ll let you all know.
Thanks for the feedback.

Oil Metering Pump stuck wide open???
Quick Test, unplug the line at the Carb and see what your output reads.
Stock 12A engine output should be @ 0.2-0.3 cc per running engine for 6 minutes at 2000rpm.
That is some Black oil you got there.
Change your oil @ 2000 miles and your Engine will love you for it.

If the PCV feeds in through the carb spacer that is definitely a possibility. Overfilling of the oil or excessive crankcase pressure caused by blowby of the oil seals...
