Oil

I have a 1980 GS with a 12a with 86,000 original miles. I want to know if going thru a qt of oil every 800 mi is considered normal. I know they consume oil but, not sure on whats the normal amount...Thanks in advance

My 85 SE with 13,000mi burns a bit less than a quart every 3,000 miles or so. Every 800 miles sounds pretty excessive and I would guess oil control seals are getting weak(or you're leaving drips all over town). Any smoking from your car??

I also loose a little under a quart per 3k on my new motor.

I would bet it is not all getting burned, you probably have some leaks.

It's a little high, yes. Might be seal wear, might be a leak, might be you need to check the adjustment on the OMP & do the volume test.

If you're not leaking, and the OMP tests out right, then seal wear is the only real possibility.

Unless you're constantly driving around WOT - - OMP pumps more as the throttle is opened wider.

Oil

No oil leaks. It only smokes a little when its first started in the morning. The exhaust at the tail pipe looks clean.

lol Just re-read my post -- my SE has 130,000 miles - not 13,000 (I wish!)

Make sure its not in your coolant. A qt in 800 miles is about 4x more than it should use in that mileage. I bet theres a lot of grey smoke when you get on it. Have someone follow you around to verify it. Probably seals like was suggested.
