Noob question, what is reservoir for?
My son and I recently bought 79 RX7 and are bringing it up to snuff for his upcoming 16th birthday. The windshield washer reservoir was cracked so we removed and sealed with silcone sealant. Leak stopped so that is good.
We noticed underneath the windshield washer reservoir mounted on the firewall another reservoir with what appears to be antifreeze. But with the radiator overflow reservoir at the front of the engine, we could not figure out what the purpose of this back reservoir. I am guessing it is used for the heater? Maybe an overflow reservoir for the heater core? We could not find it shown in our Haynes manual.
Any help is appreciated.

it is the cold Start assist. At low Temps it would inject the fluid into the carb to help with starting. I have neve seen one that worked, The motor has always been rusted on my cars. It is one of the first things I remove when I get a car.

Yeah - that and the hot start assist are dead weight added to our cars for the little ol' ladies who don't know how to do anything but turn the key to start their cars.
Feel free to remove both.

thanks for the help. It does get sub zero on occassion in KC and since the car will be a daily driver, I think we will leave it connected for now and see if we can test it out this winter to see if it still works.

I didn't clarify my stance, so I will now.
My car is a daily driver (granted, down in Florida now), and the sub zero has never worked, and even when it did, it didn't "work"
For cold starting in sub zero temps, pump the accel pedal, pull choke out to full (or less than if you have one of the over-active chokes), turn the key and that should be it. Let it purr away at 2K rpm for a few minutes, then stay under 3500 rpm until the car has finished warming up.
Of course, feel free to leave it in - it's really less than 5 pounds of dead weight for the SZ assist (I think).

The sub-zero assist will probably be the least of your problems if you are going to drive it frequently in rediculously cold temperatures. These are better warm weather cars in my opinion. That being said there are plenty of people who drive these cars in cold areas year round, but in my opinion it would be much more convenient to have a winter beater that runs better in cold weather.
Just my $.02. Good luck.
