noob observation on brakes for 1st gen
so a 1979 RX7 had stock drum brakes in rear but looking up brake pads on TireRack or other sites, they clearly show BRAKE pads and BRAKE rotors (instead of drums and shoes)
even rockauto.com states discs and pads
is it because so many have converted over to rear disc upgrade that this is the case?

No, I just checked on tirerack and autozone. I speced a 1980 mazda rx7 and they both show rear calipers and pads. Its a screw up for sure. A lot of these places use the same backends for their web parts lookup applications. I know autozone and advanceauto both use partsamerica on the backend. So if the backend has it wrong then a lot of places will show it incorrectly and its probably not even their fault really.

In my experience, parts databases are full of bad information about our cars. That's just one of the wonderful things about owning an idiosyncratic automobile, I suppose.
I do remember that I had a hell of a time finding replacement drums for my '79, because every database I came across has discs listed for all years of the rx-7. In the end, I just had to take detailed measurements and go through a catalog to find something that would fit, and they still weren't quite right.
