no timing marks

on my 83 GSL, on the eccentric pully, there are no timing marks(worn off or pained over at some point) and the timing is way off. im going to pull the distributor and replace it(old one is rusty and i have spares i know for sure are good) and i'm curious if you guys have a good method to locating"top dead center". i'm aware of how to set the timing, i just need to know where to align the pin on the pully without the orange and yellow marks.

Can you still feel/see the notches in the pulley? Anyway, there is a pretty good link on how to mark it here:

If you can find the marks, there have been some posts by wackyracer on how to make sure your pulley is on correctly. Check in the archives. I think it is posted there. Good luck.

Mark the timing marks with "WHITE OUT" and be sure that the spark plug wires are hooked-up properly, then clamp on the timing gun.

me thinks there be an inspection plate on the intake side of the engine and a little notch on the side of the flywheel. you can find tdc that way if you cant feel the marks in the pully

i would love to feel the marks in the pully, but there are rust spots on the pully, making it difficult to identify the correct notches. after finding TDC, i am going to pull the distributor out and set it back in at TDC, aligning the mark on the distributor with the divot on the distributor drive gear. that should set the timing pretty well.
