No start

Ok I thought my engine was locked but I got it loose. I've got fuel running I've got spark but still the engine just spins. It just won't start. What should be the next thing I look at. I have a haynes manual but it just seems to be not very specific on this issue. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Have you taken a look at the FAQ on this board? It will provide you with pretty much all the info you need on a no-start.

Try using 'search', too.

Try pouring some oil down the intake then cranking with a freshly charged battery or even pull start that bad boy, that should start it.

OK I have tried all the methods I have found on the forum or at least the ones that made sense. I have poured oil down the carb, in the plug holes. I have cleaned all the plugs, cables, distributor, etc,etc and etc. I have decent spark, plenty of gas, and I mean plenty. But the **** still will not start. I turn the key and all it does is spin, spin, spin and the carb fills with gas or I mean.... ya it fills with gas. Any other things I can try before I push it off a cliff. Please help dazed and confused!!!

Take the spark plugs out and see if they're soaked with gasoline or not.

Yeah, flooding is a Royal Pain In The *** for a rotary.

To get the car unflooded, remove the plugs, remove the fuse that controls the fuel pump, crank the car for a couple seconds (five to ten-ish), put everything back together and try again.

It's BLOODY easy to flood these cars if you're not careful. You want to have a "dry" combustion chamber to start with because if you don't unflood properly it'll foul the plugs then just flood itself worse. In a piston engine you can just wait for the gas to leak down to the oilpan and unlfood the car. In a rotary there is no direct connection between the bottom of the combustion chamber and the oil pan so tha tdoesn't work.

If you're getting plenty of spark and fuel, then you're probably getting too much fuel for the air that gets in there, OR you don't have enough compression. While you have the plugs out, spin the engine by hand and listen for solid compression. If you're good there, then maybe your carb needs work.

I have a question: How are you supposed to spin the engine by hand? I tried to do it according to the no-start thread, but I couldn't get it to spin over.

Hrm... maybe I should try and put it in neutral. Where do I put my hands to spin it over?

I usually spin it by the main pulley, if you cant do it by hand put a wrench on the big bolt and turn it by that.

OK I'm getting tired of this. Again I've done a resistance check on the wires and they are fine ditto for the coils. I just today tried brand new plugs and tried one at a time in the respective boot against a body bolt to check for spark....lots of spark. Still getting plenty of gas took the feed line off the carb and put it in a bottle so I didn't flood it put some oil in the plug holes and turned it by hand to confirm compression, no tester but I hear distinctive whoosh sounds while turning by hand. OK I put everything back together try fire it up and again nothing but spin, spin, spin....sort of sounds like a helocoptor while it's spinning round. I have checked and double checked everything I can think of, I'm down to my last few hairs I don't want to pull them out also. Any, and I mean any info would be greatly appreciated. Oh and I'm not in a position to pull or push start. Thanks

It floods while cranking and trying to start. Pull the spark plugs, get ignition wires away from the plug holes and crank the engine with either the fuel line off or just pull the pump fuse. Put the plugs back in and turn the fuel back on and try to start it again. If everything is right then the only other thing to keep it from starting is it being flooded.

Disconnect the fuel pump fuse, make sure you have fully charged battery, even jumper if have on top of that. Pour small amount of fuel down throat, maybe 4oz, put your foot to the floor and try to start it. rx7doctor

Fuel pump fuse. Where might I find it? In the book I have (Haynes) is shows an old style fuse panel with the long tube shaped fuses. But when I bent down to pull the fuse I noticed I have a different fuse panel I have the newer style two prong. But none of them are marked fuel pump?
