Question no oil pressure on the guage

i have an 83 gsl and i swaped motors. my warped 83(12a) with a 79(12a) but i had to use the 83 oil pan on the 79 motor. i had oil pressure before the swap but no pressure now, and all the wires are hooked up correctly? im confused. please help.

Mabey the 83 sensor is not compatible with the 79 guage. I don't see why it wouldn't be, but its a posiblility. Another thing would be the sensor went bad somehow in the swap.

ok cause i left the 83 oil pan with the 83 car so i wouldnt have to change the wiring. so i thought it would still work. but it doesnt. maybe i shoul put the 79 oil pan on the engine and just redo the wiring. ill try to do that.

Oil Pressure Sending Unit is located on the block, rear housing, below the oil filter tower. This is a copper-colored 'mushroom' that has a single-lead connector. AFAIK, all OP Senders are the same type, so you shouldn't have a problem.

Another thing to try would be to swap out the OP sender from the engine that you DID have a good pressure signal from - that may fix it. HTH,

the 79 & 80 motors didnt come with oil pressure fittings below the oil filter. the only way to make it work is to tap a new fitting in the rear banjo bolt.

IIRC, TJ had this problem as well. It had to do with the fact that 79's didnt have the OP sender in the same place as later cars. The housing isint even drilled for it. 79's tapped oil pressure off the cooler fitting I think.

EDIT: Damn you Mel, you beat me to it!

ok i know what you are talking about now. wn swaped engines my 83 had the oil cooler on top and the mushroom thing on the side twords the back. but the 79 motor that i put in my 83 car didnt have an oil cooler on the top. it had the regular radiator style. there was no place were i could put on the op sending unit on. i get it now. on the 79 models were were the oil pressure sending units? were they located in the oil pan? or do i have to tap a new fitting in the rear banjo bolt?

tapped rear banjo bolt

pix of my son's FB wherein I retained the stock OP and also installed a mechanical on the rear banjo bolt.

so my guage reads 0, so if i want to be able to have oil pressure readings i need to hook up the oil pressure guage. on my 79 engine there is no place for the oil pressure guage so all as i would have to do is tap a new hole in the banjo bolt and screw in my oil pressure guage and hook up the wire, right? then i will have oil pressure readings again? thanks a whole lot. those pics are really helpfull. thanks

Yup, thats it. Use a 1/8" npt tap and your good to go. You will probably have to extend the wire though.

I appreciate the clarification - it's been too long since I was under the hood on my 80LS parts car! Good luck to the original poster,
