no keys???

well, a couple months ago, i posted a picture of a red 85 gs that my friend was givin because the guy that owned it blew an apex seal autox'ing. the car sat for over a year with the intentions of building a race car, but his parents decided THEY wanted to donate it for a tax writeoff. well, they never did, and i convinced them to sell it to me for $100. 122k miles on the car. blown motor. everything else is in EXELLENT shape! my main problem though.. he couldnt find the key. i talked to the guy at the mazda dealership, and he said that on the passager side key lock from the inside, there is a 4-digit number and with that they could make a new key. is there any way a locksmith would have the same ability for cheaper? anyone ever done this?

getting the locks and ignition switch cylinder from a car in a junk yard would be probably pretty cheap.

i went to a lock smith in the phone book he made me a key for 15.00. I did take out the cylinder to let him see the numbers. hopefully your car is unlocked.

Dealers make keys for $10 in both Canada and the US. All you have to do is give them the VIN by phone, they cut the key (with the plastic fob on the end, not an all-metal replacement) - then show your registration when you pick it up

yeah lock smith can "make" a key they just stick it in wiggle it and out come a mold of your key. dont know how much though but dealer cool to what are they charging $35? dont mess with changing the set or the column.its a hassle

Just jam a screwdriver in there with a hammer til it turns. Screwdrivers are cheaper than keys.

tellin' ya, $10 for a new, factory key without rekeying or removing any locks is the easiest way to go

yea, rekeying it is out of the question. and when i called the dealership, they said it was too old for them to pull up the keycode on a computer, but if i had the number, than they could probably do it, they just dont have the blank for my car .

ive been doing some searching, and hopefully i can find a blank somewhere.

yea, i tried that, no luck

i went to a locksmith that was recommended by the mazda dealership, they hooked me up. no proof of ownership needed, but they were nice people. got home and it fit PERFECTLY. cost me $13.06 for 2 keys. not too bad. ill have to post pictures of the car i rescued and will hopefully be on the road in the next couple months
