No Crank - No Joy
No Crank - No Joy
After searching through 10 pages posts I still can't find an answer so I am posting here (I saw Pele's no start thread, but mine is a no crank)...
1984 RX-7
Positive and negative battery cables have been replaced, updated fuseable links, and checked the fuse box and found no blown fuses.
However, when I turn the ignition, there is no rotary joy - just the sound of silence.
All other electrics work - headlights, turn signals, fan, etc.
When I turn the key to acc I hear the fuel pump running and all the warning lights come on underneath the tach/speedo as is usual at start-up.
Then turn to start and all the warning lights go off and big fat nothing happens.
No odd noises, nothing. Heck, I'd be happy if I heard the starter not engaging, but there is nothing.
Any suggestions? I checked the connections for the new battery cables and everything is tight, the ground wires are good, and the small wire runs to the three fuseable links is attached, so what is causing my RX-7 not to R?
Thanks!
Keith

When this happens, do you lose power to everything else? Or does nothing else happen?
Have you checked the small black wire with a yellowish/white stripe that hooks to the starter solenoid? That is the wire that should energize the solenoid, and make the starter work.
If that is hooked up, verify that it gets power when you turn the key to the start position, if it does, drop the starter, and have it tested.

check the Connections on the Big terminal at the starter,as 'sometimes" they are Picky and if you don't put the cables on in the right order you don't Get Poser into the solenoid...also check the Main harness..in front of the Bell housing on the Harness there is a clip that acts as a Ground, and it is attached to the Bellhousing by a Bolt that passes through the Engine and Transmision, and holds the starter to the bell housing..If that is not Hooked up you get Everything,BUT No power to the starter(I've done it switching Clutches..it's easy to overlook)..good luck,.and post results!..Oh also make sure that you have the small wire attached On top to the solenoid as that is the power wire from the Ignition switch.
Thanks for both replies, I'll go out and check to make sure all the arcane bits and pieces are properly attached and hopefully the RX-7 will come roaring back to life...
It's alive, it's alive
One wire was disconnected from the starter, the other - attached to the solenoid, was cracked and barely hanging onto its wires. So, I went to my parts car and grabbed the wire that attached to the solenoid and installed the used/new one. I then re-attached the disconnected wire that had become detached from its stub above the cable coming in from the battery.
Crossed my fingers, got back in the car, prayed to the Church of the Holy Spinning Triangles, stuck the key in the ignition, turned...and...
...it started, it ran, wooooooooooooooooooooohooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!
Thanks for the advice guys, I wouldn't have look as closely at the starter as I did if you hadn't suggested it. Thanks again.
