Nikki flooding the secondaries
Its an 85 FB.....12A....
it had been running ok, a bit of a miss off idle though. I had done the mechanical secondary mod a year ago and I wanted to reverse it.
I pulled the carb enough to cut the wire I used, and reinstalled the carb...along the way I replaced a few vac hoses, etc....
I started it up and it sounded ok at first but then stated sputtering..then it died...I pulled the top of the air cleaner and looked down the carb. The secondary throats had pools of gas in them!
I manually opened the secondaries and the gas dumped into the intake. I started it again, holding the pedal wide open and eventually it fired up again. I went out to look at the carb while running....the jets that fed the secondaries were STEADY flowing gas into the throats...I could see a little bit in the primary side but way more and steady in the secondaries....
Then I shut it off, and the secondaries closed of course, and guess what? the jets kept flowing gas for about 30 seconds at least, and that filled the secondary throats up with that big puddle of gas again!
So, its running WAY rich so to speak..any ideas why that would happen? I wonder if I missed something on the carb or messed something up...I had it turned sideways to access the mode I did, but never actually removed it all way.......and theres no way the secondaries would be getting all that gas when idling right? I did tweak the mixture screw out a half turn while it was easily accessable...(I do have a crazy long screwdriver I made for adjusting it but its still a pain) .(does that screw moderate air or fuel---in other words, is out leaner or richer?
Its got to be something I did....which was just to cut my hardwire of the secondaries, reinstall the link arm from the vac box to the secondaries, and replace a few vac lines.....
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

The more I think about it, I wonder if I jarred the floats/gas valves when tipping the carb on its side and almost upside down....I think I will pull the top of the carb off and check it out maybe tomorrow.

Today I pulled the top of the carb off....One of the floats got a bit tweaked when I was removing it...(I have been wanting to set the floats anyway)
in any case I "set" the float levels, at least as far as the FSM showed, measuring the two heights, etc... I actually put the upside down measurement a good 1 mm higher, that is to say that the float level will now be a bit lower. Hoping that would lean it out a bit. (Ive done this LOTS of times on motorcycles)
Yeah, I know why set them, but who knows what the previous owner had done...and since I actually bent one of them a bit it was time.
I was going to look at tapping on the needle valves to seat them, but mine are tipped with rubber. I went and dug out my box of parts left over from the carb rebuild a year ago and those needle valves were also the rubber tipped variety. (Not a good thing with this ethanol laden crap coming out of the pumps I would imagine)
In any case, in the process of messing with the float settings, it seemed that one inlet was not flowing like it should...one of the needle valves was not dropping as far as the other, even though both float heights appeared to measure correctly.
After much finessing of the tang and the stop tab, I got it working equally well on both sides. (this is unrelated to my problem perhaps...it may be that the first attempts at altering the heights boogered the one side up somewhat)
Bottom line is that it stopped flooding! I also got rid of my miss off idle...I adjusted the accelerator pump a bit during this whole process.
Took it for a 10 minute drive, it did well!
