is this a newbie question?

ok so I keep seeing S4 and S5 engine stuff... so is someone could simply put what models the all engine codes are from. I have a GSL-SE is that S3 or S4? I feel dumb asking but it would be nice to see it explained.

Oklahoma is on a roll.

First the Thunder send the Spurs back to Texas. Now some guy from Tulsa who doesn't know the difference between an S3 and an S4 snags a GSL-SE.

(Hint: This is a joke, I don't know either).

Nice find, got pics?

FAQ Page: https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/1st-gen-rx-7-faq-page-237777/

Q. What's all this talk about SA, FB, FC, FD's? and what about S1, S2, S3
A. In short, it's all about VIN numbers.
Check out this thread entitled fb, fc, f-me I'm confused (which also answers about the S* designations)
Here's a cool page called Alphabet Soup & Vehicle Identification

GSL-SE is S3, S4 and S5 are both versions of the FC. The thread above gives a great breakdown of some of the lingo used on here....

here's a quick guide:

S1- 79-80
S2- 81-83
S3- 84-85

the GSL-SE was only produced in 84 and 85, thus making it an S3

S4- 86-88
S5- 89-91
no official 1992 model year RX-7's were produced.

I will give this a shot...

SA...78-80 12a engine carbed (S1)

FB...81-85 12a engine carbed (S2)

(Series 3) 84-84 GSL SE 13b fuel injected

FC...86-92 13b fuel injected and 13b turbo (tubo II) and vert. (S4-S5)

FD 92-94 (usa)- to 99 in japan... 13 b fuel injected twin turbo (series 6)

FE...04-11...Renesis (RX8)

It should be mentioned that in other parts of the world this info is different ie AUS and England, but for the US market I think I got it right. Hope this answers your question

One thing I would correct here is that 81-83 is a S2, 84-85 is S3 (regardless of engine)

Just to complicate things a bit more, the 83-85 12a is actually the same, but 83 is still regarded as a S2 because of the interior and body basically matching that of an 81-82 (with some minor differences...)

And to FURTHER complicate things (lol, sorry) there are some major differences within the S4 engines, mid 87 they went from low impedance injectors to high impedance, so it's kind a split...

Sorry, I'll stop now...

the series thing is kind of dumb, the Australians use it and we've adopted it. before that we used to just use the model year, cause it works. the japanese use something different, in japan they have something like 7 different versions of the FD!

I agree it gets confusing especially when, even within the series there are numerous differences.

it only is important when it comes time to sell it.

the crusher doesn't care what series or options the car has.
