New to Rotarys

Hey all, I just bought a 1983 GSL from a friend of mine. The car looks good, and runs very nice, but it' needs some seroius help.

The chassis has 216,600 miles on it, but it had a Mazda factory reman put in about 8 years ago with 45,000 miles on it now. The car was repainted but the prep work was crap and now it's rusting in a number of places, including the sunroof drains (apparently a common problem) down by the rear wheels. The tint in it is purple and faded so I may end up buying new door windows and rear boot glass from someone eventually (fortunately the deck-shocks are new) if I cannot successfully heatgun this crap out. Mechanically everything is OK, athough it's slow .The driver's side electronics don't work, the passenger side window keeps falling out of track, and the sunroof opening mechanism is stripped (buying a new one from classifieds hopefully soon!). The steering is also very loose and I'm not totally sure how to adjust it, although I did see something about it on Maz-something or other.com. I've replaced all engine fluids, and spark plugs, so she's running pretty well now. I want to replace the diff fluid, gear oil, and comopletely bleed the brakes and clutch. Finally the carb is making a helluva noise and from reading ALL THROUGH your FAQ page I believe it's the shutter valve.

Other than that, I'm looking at the Bonez mid-pipe w/o cats to replace the rusty POFS that's on the car now, and would like to find a cat-back and used header if possible.

About me though, I'm no stranger to working on cars, I drive a 1988 Plymouth Grand Voyager 2.5L 5spd and a 550+hp Dodge Stealth.

Thanks for your (future) time!

David

P.S. what in the hell is a carbeurator?

here's a picture of the vehicle. You can see the rust in the corner very well.

yes, I know what they are but I've had to check out a few books from the library to figure out how they work.

Welcome to the forum, there is a ton of knowlege here and I am sure that over time you'll learn more than you ever bargained for. Remember to use the search function as it is a good way to find some of the answers that you cant find in the FAQs.

You want a parts car? I got one up here for $500 you can have, but it'll need towing. Rear rotor has lost compression. but you get a custom header/presilencer and catback exhaust...new clutch hydraulics...and the window electronics and all that are in good working order.

Faye - Is the interior on the your car red?? Also, how "custom" is this exhaust? I've had a fair share of PITA installs due to things being "custom". No dis to whoever built it just wondering.

Yeah, I've gotten pretty good at searching on VB3, a helluva lot better than I was with the old version. I've already found Peejay's info about relubing the wiper motor and parts, as well as what NOT to do with ATF (pour it down the carb). I'm just kinda miffed about the shutter valve replacement I read about...thinking time to upgrade to DCOE stuff.

Love those wheels. Are they the American Racing wheels?

The wheels say ARE on them, I'm assuming they're OLD American Racing wheels, but I cannot tell as I cannot remove the wheels from the car, the lug/hub cover's retaining screws are siezed in place...

I wonder if that is a common problem that was had with those wheels. Most of the time I see them, they no longer have the caps on. I believe they were the American Racing Hammer series of wheels. No longer made. I'd love to have a set of those, or course there are other sets I'd like too, panasport, weds(bbs?), etc.
