My brother sanded mine down, I forget what he used. BUt he only got half the car done. LoL. The pics I posted were before it got sanded and buffed. So it is shinier now. You can use like 1600 or 2000 if it is real smooth. But we used a bunch of different grits at different times. I just don't remember what we used at a particular time.

But to be completely honest, and not to put you down to hard, but work of this quality really makes painters cringe. We can pick out all the things that are so very wrong with it in comparison to base/clear coat or spray gun painting. I don't know what you did, but the overall quality could have been much better.
I am not in the biz and would have to agree. The one thing I just don't think looks right on a first gen. is one solid color. I probably should not even try to explain but I am going to anyway. The black trim pieces represent the time period for the car. The period after chrome and before the look where trim pieces are were phased out with the integrated look such as bumpers that look to be part of the body and not as a seperate piece. All the black trim pieces on a seven are exactly that, trim pieces. They were not intended to be painted over like hardware on window. That look was coming up. Maybe I just don't like it because I am a purist when it comes to issues of the sorts, wether it is cars or otherwise, but life goes on.

PT Ray, I'm kinda with you on the trim... plus I think it helps to break up the space so it's not just a big color field of blah...

Curious to see these pics though... I'll be repainting my '81 this summer and I want to know what I can be expecting :-)
How much of a difference does anybody think there'd be if I were to use proper paint but still do it myself?
(I would probably have a friend that's good at it do the final coats)

You did a great job!
and for the fool with the gay comment, I purchased my house from two gay guys, and it was the best house on the marke!
In 2005 i think the word GAY means high quality, every time that fool puts on a nice shirt to go pick up a girl, a gay guy problem designed the shirt..
so take his words as, IT LOOKS GREAT!!!

well just took these today. The car has been sitting out back for 3 months, hasn't been driven. But this is the best pic I could get of it. The wood pile was there and I couldn't get beside it to get a good pic.

yea, this is a site for my honda and rx7 and some DIY honda junk, like DSM injector installs, mini me swaps. www.geocities.com/uncgolf25

One pic of the sentra. It has custom front bumper and side skirts. The front it made to fit a accord and the side skirts are made to fit a prelude. My bro fiberglassed it all himself, this was when I was like 12 or so. I watched and learned. It has a Sr20de swap in it and it hauls ***.

Dan, Just a thought, but you might be able to manage somewhere in between 28 and 1200 ...

If you don't have any needed body work, you remove or mask as much as you can to save the shooter on labor ( wiper assy, hatch hinges, lock trim rings, mirrors?, etc.). If you want to repaint any of that black, then the shops use and sell the same trim and accessory black in a spray can that the body shops use, so you can do that yourself. If you're keeping the color the same, then maybe you can skip the door jambs and keep all the new spraying on the outside.

Again, if no body work required, then I'll bet you can make minor ding repairs, do the sanding and have it blocked out and ready for primer. There's alot of how-to-do-this on the net for specifics on materials, grit size, technique, etc. and those materials are relatively inexpensive.

Then when you're done, you should already have arranged for a local shop to spray your car with no body work, no prep, and no removal, replacement, or masking of all the little stuff. They will just prime, block and shoot. That should get you down to half. Maybe more. Some of the shops are hungry for a quick easy job like this.

Another thing to save bucks is to go with a one step paint job. Instead of primer, then base coat, then clear coat, consider going with a quality one-step Acrylic enamel ( Dupont Centauri or many others ) after the primer. Chances are that's what you have now. It will be much less than a basecoat/clearcoat and very durable. It will shine forever as long as you keep the Mother's on it.
