A new MG from China?
A new MG from China?
This may seem off topic, but the main reason I bought my 1st gen RX-7 was to replace my twin carbed '78 MGB (which needed to be tuned every 110 miles) with something similar that could do the 110 mile/day commute.
The first gen RX-7 is perfect, it handles and even looks like an MGB, but it almost never needs to be fixed (especially mine, I've got the GSL model with all the autofix options).
So, could this be the new MG/1st gen? Made in Oklahoma?

I'll be looking at these when they come out in '08 and I'll probably buy one if they put a rotary in it.

I just heard about this at the bar last night. I used to get a couple og MG magazines but when I let the subscriptions run out, MG had just gone under...I figured they were gone for good. But for a year or so before that they had been reporting on this joint venture with a Chinese company. I'll be watching this closely, but doubtful I would get one. I imagine it will be an MG only in name...no heritage.

I want your car....
There was a big announcement here earlier in the week, about a new manufacturing plant for MG in Ardmore, Ok. and a worldwide headquarters for operations outside of Asia in Oklahoma City, Ok.
That same night, I stopped at convienence store, and parked my 1st gen right next to one of the last midgets built (rubber bumbers). Yeah, I know this has no relavence to the new MG, just thought it was kinda odd.......

I used to think that about Kia's, they just don't belong on the road. But Kia is now making some nice looking cars that are competitive with Honda, Toyota and Mazda for cost and quality.
Who knows what to expect from the Chinese, but with most of our manufactured goods already coming from them, I would not want to underestimate their impact on the US car market. And that GM TF concept car looks pretty good.

With Volvo's being made in Mexico and lot's of foreign brands being made in the US, I would think that an MG plant in Oklahoma would be a good thing, no matter who owns it.
The main issue, it seems to me, is quality and cost. If they can build a Miata-like coupe (don't like rag tops, the main problem with the Miata in my opinion) that performs better and costs less, I'd buy it no matter who built it. Especially if they offer a rotary option.
And if it has certain real MG features, then that would be a plus. I especially like that they are copying the MG GT model, always my favorite MG but very hard to find. They say they will use the MG frame, as if that is a good thing. Wire wheels maybe?
I like MGs and I even like working on them. But when it comes to MGs, "tuning" doesn't refer to just the dual SU's - everything on a Brittish MG needs to be tuned up once a week. Anybody remember those manually adjustable rear drum brakes? I do. And of course the Brittish never did get past mechanical ignitions.
A newly manufactured MG that performs better and costs less than a Miata, with a renesis engine. Now that would be the RX-7 of the future!

Thanks all, would U believe I picked it up for $600 about 4 months ago! It was sitting in my friends back yard for like 6 years. Talked him down to $600. I pulled the carb and rebuilt it and did a little tune up. It has been runing like a champ since. Some one had rebuilt the motor and already installed a MSD distrib and webber intake and carb. I think it might have a small cam too? Anyway runs great. I'm happy with it.
