"new engine" burns oil at high rpm.

my last motor took a **** on me at 165k. wasnt too sad about it since i have put that car through HELL between spirited driving, autox, drag strip, and running 5 minutes up the road on a cold engine to school everyday last year (i know i know, dont flame me). i bought a motor that had been "built by atkins, and had 19k on it with new housings". the housings looked clean, well the whole motor did actually, i sounded like it had strong compression by spinning the flywheel over when the motor was sitting on the floor. started right up when i put it in, havent had any problems with it minus ~20psi of oil pressure at idle, and ~60-80 at higher rpms. my last motor was ~50psi at idle, and 65-90 at upper rpms. ANYWAYS

so the other day i was merging onto the highway and i decided to open up my car alittle since i havent done so in a while. i rip it to redline (wasnt **** for the old motor), and decelerated down to 5.5k in third, put it in 5th and start cruising. i looked in my rear view mirror and at 80mph i could not see the car behind me because my car shot out so much blue smoke. ive NEVER had this happen to me before. im REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY hoping its not an oil seal taking a **** on me. it held oil pressure, it doesnt smoke at idle, idles fine when warm (shes hates being cold). i did it again today and as soon as i hit redline more blue smoke came out, but not nearly as much.

i ran a can of BG MOA in my oil this oil change with some castrol gtx 20w40. (upped the weight for some oil pressure). also, im still using the stock oil metering system. with the other motor i was premixing my gas. im thinking about going back to premix. anyone want to take a stab at what this could be?

was it a bad idea to run the MOA? this is my daily driver seeing about 60 mile + each day.

If the smoke went away some when you changed the oil and used a heavier weight oil, i would try to get rid of the omp and run premix. Second, once you run the premix (synthetic two stroke), use a 20w50 oil and see if the smoke thins out some more. If the motor sat for a while before you owned it, there is a chance that the oil seals aren't sealing very well and therefore using a heavier oil is a good idea. Beyond that, I don't know of a way to know for sure that oil seals are out other than the tell-tale smoke on decel.
Good Luck

i was running 5w50. i did not adjust the omp, i did not know you could. thats what i was hoping it was, just dumping too much oil from the omp. i may make up a blockoff plate for it and start with the premix again.

im not sure how long the motor say, but i put about 2500 on it and didnt have a problem. i probably went a good 1k miles before i hit redline again, and it happened to be when i upped the weight in oil.

I wouldn't say not premixing is the problem. But I would be concerned since the motor is broken in already.

Switch to Valvoline Max Life 20/50 oil and cross fingers?

i have just been real easy on the car, but there is an autox next weekend and im REALLY itching for it since i havent autox'd at all this season, so i started messing around with it and im kinda starting to think this engine is crap.

actually, the only thing i have done is disconnected the omp and ran around the block, and sure enough, a SHITLOAD of blue smoke came out.

will 20/50 really help, or should i just start looking for a new engine?

Try 10 oz of MMO in the tank every fillup in case it's carbon-stuck somewhere. If that doesn't work try 10 oz of synthetic 2-cycle every fillup. Disregard the OMP.

A couple years ago one of the forum guys, who also was a member of API, suggested Valvoline for the sump because it has low ash, thus lower carbon buildup.

Sounds like your oil control rings are leaking. I went through this a few weeks ago. Make sure that your oil level is correct first of all, the manual is kind of confusing on this....

What I did, that had excellent results; drained off 2 quarts of oil and added lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer to the crank case to replace the 2 quarts. Haven't had an issue since. Might work for you too. Good luck....

I am not going to rant here...

but yeah, your oil control rings are dead. the rebuilder most likely re-used the rings, the whether they replaced the o-rings is anyones guess..

atleast this is better than a more notorious bearing failure.

i would try the 20w50. that's the recommended weight for street driven rotaries. if it keeps up, it sounds like your oil control seals are failing.
