i have seen these new buttons for rotors on a site, i think his name is hurley. does anyone know anything about these buttons and if u have tried them how good r they. i would like some feedback.. thanks

I was actually thinking corner seals, if anything other than buttons like on your shirt... All we can do is assume what he was talking about until he comes back here...

The question that remains in my mind is why they decided to use a stock flywheel? Especially when the engine already comes with a counterweight. An aftermarket flywheel should have been the obvious choice. Hurley certainly has some different ideas.

As for the button, there was a post recently where some guy kept using the words crunk and button. It made me think it would be a funny name for a children's show.

Man, I've been asking and asking about people who've used Hurley seals. Nobody here seems to have used them or they don't wanna share their experiences... *shrug*

They have some interesting seal designs... Wish I could get some input on them for my rebuild, but I guess it'll just be Mazda stockers.

 

Looks really neat to me, but I don't want to be anyone's guinea pig.

 

For now just go with stock or solid corner seals and FD springs. I wouldn't want to try an un-proven seal without talking to anyone that has used them.

 

I may be rebuilding my first rotary in a few months. 105k miles '86, runs great but smokes around redline. I've read over most of Kevin Landers's website but I'm still not sure exactly what parts are used in a "budget" rebuild. I know I'd want the gasket set and apex seals, but I'm not clear on a lot of other things: replace springs? just o-rings or the seats? wear on side seals, corner seals, etc.

I don't think that it's ever been over-heated and it doesn't burn coolant. Also, I imagine that burning oil at redline, aside from being annoying, probably helps with lubrication , so I'd expect the engine to be pretty rebuildable.

Edit: But, the indicated oil pressure is lower than what I'm used to with my 12a. On the '85 12a I get about 75+ indicated at 3k rpm; the '86 13b shows about 40 and doesn't start to rise much until 4k, then and even at 4k isn't up to 60.

 

For a budget rebuild here's what I'd get:

Gasket kit
Apex seals
Apex springs
Corner springs(FD)

Everything else I'd only replace if it's damaged. Side seals and corner seals should be fine, oil control rings will be fine, just put in the new o-rings. I rebuilt a motor that was overheated on a regular basis for over a year. The apex and corner springs were dead, but all other springs were perfect, so I'd bet they'll be perfect on yours too.

The oil pressure is probably fine. I'd check with someone who knows 13b's better to make sure though.

 

You have got to be kidding right? Where are you looking and asking? Too funny. Ironically I have been a regular customer of both PFS and Hurley. There is a lot of "conversation" about these vendors as everyone is no doubt aware. I don't want to enter the fray, but will say I was always satisfied in my dealings with both businesses and their respective owners Peter and Eamon. Is the engine going to be turbocharged and if so how much?

As you can see, nobody has said ANYTHING, good or bad about Hurley seals...

I'm looking and asking HERE, because my experience, the forums, the parts fiche PDF's, the Haynes, and the Factory manuals are the only resources I have...

If you can suggest another source to ask about Hurley seals, I'm all open to suggestion...

As they say: location, location, location... People have said a lot of things elsewhere but perspective is important. Post your question in the performance/technical sections on here or other forums like NoPistons.com, Ausrotary.com, or Mazdarotaryclub.com, or the e-mail lists and you will get plenty of responses to sort through. There are already a ton of opinions on the seals, so search but consider the sources. From my understanding of your car and engine plans (no turbo), they should work, but so would the Mazda seals (or Atkins, Ianetti, Rotary Aviation, etc. for that matter). You might want to use a builder who is familiar with them. Other than Engman (lol), I think Bruce Turrentine has used Hurley seals. http://rotaryresources.com I forgot to mention his name earlier when you asked about rebuilding (sorry bruce), so here is a plug for him.

 

Might not be shopping for an engine builder... I learned that I can port with a dremel tool... I figured I'd need a die grinder, and while I have one, I don't have an air compressor that'll run it for longer than a minute or two.

And judging from the pics I've seen, it shouldn't be THAT hard to rebuild... My only issues would be the needle bearing that can get fucked up by messing with the front pulley.

 

In that case, (speaking of Bruce) get his engine rebuilding video, and use the Mazda seals. It's fairly straightforward but let me know if you need help getting it out or in.

 

I think Advance Auto Parts has a special on engine hoists... Like $250 or something... I just need to figure out where to put it when I'm done.

The apartment frowned on the stack of rims on my balcony... I had to put a layer of wood on top and cover it with a table cloth and call it patio furnature.

 

They have folding models, $119 at At Pep Boys, and Harbor Freight around $149 (dont know if there is any difference in quality, probably all very similar). Many years ago I made a hoist frame out of 4x4 and carriage bolts which could be disassembled, but hoists are so cheap it wouldn't be worth the effort.
