New 13B engine

I just received my new gas tank from Mazda today, cost me 445$ Canadian. I still think it was worth it...

I need to rebuild my engine this winter for my se, so I asked at Mazda how much for a brand new 13B? I was shocked... 2041$ canadian, 3 in stock in Ontario. Geez that's actually... cheap, in my opinion!!

Here's my question. Since my engine burns coolant, I probably have at least one warped rotor housing. Then I have to get new apex seals, side seals, oil seals, and a bunch of other seals and miscellaneous things. And then I have to put everything back together (and it would be my first rebuild). I'm wondering if it's worth all the trouble.

How much would it cost me approximately to rebuild my engine, assuming I need 2 new housings? (no used housings up here in Quebec!) Anyone else buy a brand new engine from Mazda? Any problems with it?

All we get is Remanufatured. I would suggest buying a rebuild from a repudable rotary shop. Don't know about Canada but there are MANY in the states.....Oh ya and get a street port, you won't be disappointed.

What's a JDM motor? And I don't think I need a streetport, I just want my Rex to be nice, original, and in real good shape. 135 Hp is good enough for me. There aren't any rotary shops in Quebec, but I'm not sure about Ontario. How much does a remanufactured engine cost in the states?

Think I'll get that new motor, and I'll have two spares that I can play around with and learn to rebuild. Now if I could just convince my wife...

sometimes, that would be harder than installing a new engine.

Now, it's in my car, and it runs soooo great!!

Good luck with the rebuild

Re engine prices, my local dealer told me the Mazda remanufactured would cost about $2100 US and $1200 US to install. A local rotary sports shop has it for less, does better and more work, and has cheaper labor rates, plus I know them. I am not ready to replace yet but I know my costs and options for when I have to. I would search out a regional rotary shop. I just do not have that much faith in the dealers. Many do not even have someone who knows anything about rotaries.

French RX-7 I see that you live in Motreal I was looking unsuccessfully to find a new 13B motor. I want to put the 13B in my 81 and was wondering if you could give me the information on where I could get one of those motors you talked about in your first post.

I went to Mazda in Repentigny (15 minutes from Montreal) to get a brand new gas tank, and since I need a new engine I just asked the guy at the counter. He made a phone call and told me 2041$, and they had three in stock in Toronto. That's supposed to be a brand new 84 13B engine. I don't know anyone who works there, I don't have any special discounts, and I know that nobody there has a clue to how a rotary works. But seeing the prices some of you have mentionned in the upper posts, I'm getting skeptical about those prices for a BRAND NEW engine. Maybe it's a rebuilt and the guy forgot to mention it. I have no faith at all in Mazda dealers, which is why I do everything myself (or try to).

And yes WANKEL FD, I should have bought that engine, but a marriage is damn expensive. I'll probably PM you when I'm ready to rebuild my engine, just took it out of the car last weekend (free beer and pizza!!).

Lee Lyons, any Mazda dealer should be able to order those engines from anywhere in Canada, their main warehouse is in Toronto. I've noticed that some dealers don't have any parts listings before 1986, and they're just too lazy to call. But first I'll try to find out more about those engines (new or rebuilt, but the guy really told me new). I'll also check the prices for the turbo II and 13B-rew.

You might want to check if you get a warranty with a new Mazda supplied engine if YOU install it. Some dealers require "factory certified" installs for warranty.
- also, if you think a marriage is expensive, try a divorce

The JDM rotary engines are TURBO only, no N/A.
