Hey guys. I'm looking for someone who is an expert or specialist with the 12As in or around the Hagerstown Maryland area. I have a pretty astound vacuum leak somewhere and me and my dad can't seem to figure out where it's coming from. Any help is greatly appreciated

If it's a BIG vacuum leak, it's the hose going to the bottom of the intake manifold at the back of the engine.

Well I'm not sure how big it is but I can hear it. It sounds like a whining, kind of like a horn dying

That whining sound could be coming from one of the hoses going to the under side of your air cleaner housing. This hose is about 5/8" in diameter and plugs into the under side of the blue air cleaner housing at a point on the left rear side. If the shutter valve (to which the other end of this hose attaches) packs it in the hose will emit a sound similar to a dying calf in a hail storm.

Unplug the hose from the housing and then place your thumb over the end of the hose. If the noise goes away you've found your problem. The shutter valve is a major pain in the *** to access and replace. Most of us simply shove a bolt into the end of the hose and clamp it into place, thereby plugging the hose.

If this doesn't solve your problem the issue may not be a vacuum leak--- unless the noise is also accompanied by much cranking to get the car to start, stalling when letting off the gas from higher rpms with the clutch depressed and very rough idling.

The previously-mentioned ruptured hose at the lower RH side of the engine (just above the exhaust manifold heat shield) would produce just such symptoms but no noise. You may not be able to see the rupture but you can certainly reach down with your hand and feel it. Just make sure the engine has had a chance to cool down first or you'll burn your hand. Ask me how I know.

Okay. There's no performance loss, it did run really rough and stalled quite frequently when stoping but that was just because the air mixture of the carb was off. My dad said it sounded like a vacuum leak. I will check on that hose tomorrow and see if it helps. But then again my carb just needs completely rebuilt anyway so it could be something in there. It hesitates and performs poorly when it's not wamred up all the way. I have a carb ready to be shipped to me from RX-7Carl at PB&J Racing, I just need to get the money for it LOL
