need input on e-fan idea

i have had this idea in my head for some time, and want to know what you all think.

depending on what you guys think iam going to be doing this on my rx7 and my 84 rs turbo capri.

i know for some car's your able to buy a after market efan that comes with a shroud but most are just a rim around the fan like this pic

so it draws the air only thru where the fan is..

then you have a after market fan with a shroud like the picture below. the problem i see with this type, is that the shroud is to close and doesn't curve enough. the air flowing around the edges would not be as high flow as the center.

i have allso see metal shrouds that are just a flat plate with the edges bent 1/4 from the edge and the plate only has like 1/4 gap between the plat and Radiator. with two plates that swing out to let traped air out.

my idea would be to make my own shroud. i would cut a foam block 4 inches thick by the size i would need(for get the w and h of the rx7) lay the efan i want on it and mark the mounting tab's ect. i then would carve the foam to get a nice wide curve from the edges to the center to allow the air from the edges flow better to the center where the fan is. i have worked with carbon fiber and fiber glass before so that wouldn't be a problem.
after i lay down one layer i would use strips of metal or washers to reinforce the mounting points.
do you think that would be a good setup.
for the rx7 what cfm fan would i need.

That actually sounds like a really good idea to me. I think any high quality fan, like flex-a-lite or something would be best. I don't know exactly what CFM you need, something close to stock would do just fine.

i dont know what stock is lol. for the 84 rs turbo capri(fox body think svo 2.3 liter turbo) we have a a mustang 5.0 Radiator. so we know what e fan's will work, just not sure about the cfm for the rx7.

if i had the money i would do a tilted radiator with two e fan's on the lower half and cut the hood and bend it down so the air would come out of the hood above the two efan's . one member has that set up

There is a real good alternative to a "good" aftermarket fan, look under the hood of any ford Taurus or Escort. Nicely designed shoud around an e-fan that rivals the supposedly good aftermarket fans, and they even fit the stock RX-7 rad perfectly.

This is my 82 with an e-fan from a 91 ford escort. The only mods done to the shroud was cutting off the original mounting tabs and designing some new ones.

well considering the rx4 rad i'm using, i went with either the cooling fan or a/c condensor fan from a '93 mitzu galant. just a couple pieces of ss sheet metal, i was able to create quite an effective setup. the fan has 2 sets of wires but with ever possible wiring combinations, it's only a single speed fan, and surprisingly quiet compaired to some factory efans i've heard.

If you make a nice mold and do good lay up I think it would be a great product. after all the taurus fan shroud doesn't quite fit the rad perfectly, and the install I did, although looks ok, is still a little ghetto.
I used the taurus fan/shroud and attached it with metal angle and rivets, later I installed a new rad and the shroud wouldn't fit.
Thought about it for a while then cut the shroud off and placed the fan in the factory rx-7 shroud. Using screws with fuel hose as spacers and spray foam around to seal it and reinforce it. Some time later going through the archive, I found Mattys1stgen, IIRC, had already done this.
Here's mine.

would it work better if the fan was bigger then the rad like Stevan's setup. cause i was thinking of getting a fan the same size as the rx7 rad is tall.

It's not bigger than the rad, just offset upward. I think the fan blades themselves are smaller diameter than the stock fan.
