Need an ID on this thing in the engine bay...
Alright well mine is broken.
The wire that goes from it to the carb is rusted, it doesn't move at all. The little connector that connects the wire to the little device thing there is broken, so even if the wire did move, it wouldn't work.
How bad is this? Can I get away with it being broken for a while?

i think the electric control is only there for sensing when it should be held in place, not the choke function itself, so as long as the cable itself is fine ... the choke should work.
here, let me educate you in Ghetto 101 ...
in the winter, when you REALLY need the choke (i don't know how cold it gets in Arkansas) just make sure you have a clothes peg (or two).
start the car with the choke, then slide it (them) under the choke lever ... take it (them) off when the car is warm enough to idle by itself.
now, i'm not saying don't fix it ... but i'm saying you can survive if you choose not to.

Yes it's the OPPOSITE of a choke.
When the engine is hot, that little motor pulls the throttle open a bit when you're cranking so that the engine doesn't flood.
It's not necessary if you remember to hold the throttle open when starting a hot engine. Remember, cars have to be designed so that Any Idiot can drive one.

I removed mine as part of a rats nest tidy up and when i did so my choke no longer stays out (ignition on ect....)
the choke now springs back like it does when the ignition is off.
Yep i agree with mike p-28, i would toss it. I tossed mine, no noticable difference in how the engine runs. besides once its out, you have yet another thing to hang from your christmas tree, right next to the pretty multi colored connectors of your rats nest
hehehe

must be a aussie thing then 'cause ive owned 31st gens and its been the same on all 3..
mine didnt run any bit different!! just could not use the choke unless you held it out the whole time, or used a clothes peg as we are now all informed
I don't think I'm gonna remove the rat's nest until I buy an aftermarket carb... Too many people have complained of problems when you leave the stock carb on and take the nest out.

I bet the reason yours doesn't work is because you removed the wires from the temp sensor. The temp sensor for the choke release is located in the thermostat housing.
Revhead, or anyone else.
My 79 is missing many wires to certain things. I have no connectors to the sensors on the radiator, both the top sensor and the sensor on the driver side near the top. Are these needed for anything motor related, or are they just idiot lights for something?
