need help - only have two gears - 3/4/5/rev locked out
I have an 84 base with a 12A engine and 5 speed. Transmission was fine, no rattles, buzzes, or noise. I use synthetic gear lub and the clutch is reasonalby new. Was running through the gears, 1, 2nd, 3rd, wouild not go into 4th. Now 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse are locked out. I have checked the service manuals and the seggestion is the transmission control. Before I pull the transmission in the morning has anyone had this problem before and can share any tips

after a collision my tranny was locked into 5th/rev
it ended up being that the shift rod (?) for 3rd/4th had been engaged also so the shifter couldnt get out of 5th/rev and 3rd gear was simultaneously engaged with 5th

locked gear box
Thanks for the info. Your comment reinforces my thought that the shift controller in the tail of the transmission is jammed. Out comes the transmission to see what the little gremins have done.

Found the problem, its the spring - anyone know how to replafce it
I found the spring to hold the shifter in place has either moved or broken. Anyone know how to replace the spring without removing the transmission - I have heard you can run without the spring - anyone know pros or cons on just removing the spring? I can not tell what it was to be like so if anyone has a picture of a correctly installed spring this would be helpful - the service manual is vague on this point.

I'm dealing with the shifter return spring in a tranny. The info is in a recent thread started by dj55b.
It is wise to remove the tranny to service the spring. Since yours is messed up anyway, you should remove it. The spring is likely not causing your shifting troubles.
