Need help with custom tail light blinking pattern

I am gonna go 3 red bulbs in my tail lights since their clear.

I want to set them up so when the blinker is on they will blink towards the out side of the car.

I dont know how to describe it so here is a gif image,
Picture this as being your passenger tail light.

I wanted to know if anyone knew a way to make this happen, feel free to doodle a schematic and send it to me if you know how.

The only problem I can see is cops wanna mess with you about that. That is pretty unusual design though. how big is this whole thing going to be?

Its just the standard rx7 tail lights.

I checked into the local laws and you can have red bulbs for your turn signal, side markers, and front markers.
In fact alot of cars and truck both newer and older have red turn signals.
A handfull of trucks only use one bulb for brake, turn, and running light.

I will keep it so only the 2 center bulbs light up with running lights just like stock.

So Im gonna go red on all of them, I never liked the orange.

My tail lights, side markers, and front markers are clear so whatever color bulbs I put in is the color they will be.

A set of custom lights?

I guess you could send them to me and I could see what I can do, I dont have any experience with the older lights though.

Those old fords had a mechanical system, kind of like the rotor inside the distributor cap. As it turned slowly it would open and close the 3 separate circuits.

Expensive and not easy to find.

You could design a circuit using some IC's. I did it in college for one of my classes, However it took a long *** time getting it to be reliable.

To me this might cause some issues with cops, I think the "cool" factor will wear off.

Good luck

I'm with Jimmy54...

It's incredibly simple to do with a few ICs, but might cause the cops to pay closer attention to you than you'd like...

I have seen this on other cars it should not attract excess attention. Cougar and some others. Mustang perhaps? And another big car from late 60's had it.

hmmm. If I use 555 timer IC's then I would have to use 4 relays and that would be pretty damn noisey hearing 4 relays clicking away.

any other ideas ?

Use solid-state relays... they'll be silent

I'm not sure why 4 relays?

1 relay per bulb, then the first to trigger the whole process..

"to trigger the whole process"-- i.e., to trigger the 555?
Could you just use a voltage regulator? I think that would be cheaper...

The older cougars had this. Basically, they used a small electric motor to turn a shaft with lobes on it. When a lobe contacted the main part of the circuit, it would complete the circuit and make one of the lights light up. Very simple to understand really, if you have a pic of the unit. Its basically three mechanical switches that activate at different times, according to lobe position.

Sometimes you can watch the first bulb get dimmer as the second and third bulbs light up.
