PA Need advice on replacing belts on an 80 12a

Well I just shredded my alternator belt on my 1980 RX and now need to replace it. Actually it was long overdue (it was the 32 year old original). So now I will replace all three belts (about time). Anyone have any tips on the best way to approach this? Other than loosening the mounting brackets and the A/C tensioner do you need to do anything to replace the belts? I assume they can be “slid” around the fan without removing it. Appreciate any input; other than I should have done this long long ago.

loosening the tensioner is how the belts were designed to come off and on. grab a hanes manual for pics and such. the belts will fit over the fan one blade at a time. good luck

Yep; only 'hard' part is making sure you put the right ones on in the right sequence, & don't over-tighten them.

MUCH easier than belt replacement on modern cars.

a good tip is that you will need to ensure you do not break the lower tension bolt on the air pump. this one is particularly prone to seizing in the air pump. i usually use dayco top cog belts from advance auto if i'm not using the oem bando belts from the dealer.

I've had mine on and off many times. Biggest thing I would say is replace all three, to ensure something similar doesn't happen again. And take a picture to ensure that you put the belts back on in the right order - A/C closest to radiator, Air pump middle, Alternator next on an 84 12a, not sure if your 80 is the same or not. Also, as already stated, don't over tighten them. Good luck and welcome!
